HELP ME PLEASE

i have an invention that i have created a working prototype for and i have looked around with multiple patent searches and have not turned up anything like what i have invented. i am however confused and overwhelmed with what the next step is and how i am to accomplish it. i want to get a patent and possibly/probably sell my idea/design but i would like to talk to someone that has either been through the entirety of the process before or has a good amount of knowledge in the area.

one more fact that may or may not be relevant: i'm only a high school senior.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Age doesn't matter.  Ben Franklin was a young boy when he invented the swim fins. 

Mostly it takes determination and money. 

Assuming your idea is a "WOW" and appeals to a large market you need to understand what it could cost to get on the shelf.  This includes all capital required for further development, creating and executing a marketing plan and manufacturing including any tooling required and final production.  Depending on the idea, could easily be in the tens of thousands of dollars.  Basically, preform a cost/risk analysis with pay-back or break-even.

If the above is a go, a good first step is to meet with a patent attorney.   A patent search is highly recommended.  If nothing shows up, have your attorney file a patent.

Then find someone who can help you.  I tell people all the time, you only have one shot to make your product a success.  Get the marketing right, especially the packaging.  It's all about the marketing!!
