I'm going to disagree with people here.

 

I think SEO can  be important and it is certainly useful as far as local businesses go.  Most people charge too much money to do SEO and they don't provide enough measurable results.  When people optimize your site, they don't care about finding the right market or the highest quality of traffic, they just want to optimize for a few keywords that you select... and in most cases you don't know the effect that you will have.  That being said, there are some great companies out there that will optimize you for maximum keywords and drive a lot of traffic.  I don't think SEO is the way to go if you're just getting started online.

 

For me SMO is 10X more effective.

 

I can choose exactly who I want to drive to my websites.  The traffic quality is much higher.  You can choose the groups and the conversations that you want to be involved in.   It also has a much more viral effect.  People who are interested in what you have likely have friends that are interested too so they will see things in their conversations and newfeed (facebook).

 

It does take a time commitment though.  I schedule 6 hours per week to interact with people and post content.
