It`s great to have stats that we can see how visitors arrive at our sites.  I know we`ve discussed keywords, and keyword phrases before, but  sometimes I can`t believe that someone typed in  "that big old long phrase" to arrive at our site.   Am I wrong in thinking these type of searches can only be from competitors trying different phrases?  Anybody have any thoughts on this?

It`s okay, I`ll take the hits, but probably not the conversion to sales,... on some of those phrases!!

Yes, you`re wrong for thinking that way. Here`s why: While I have no doubt that a few of your competitors may be searching those long  keyword  phrases, legitimate prospects are also doing the same thing. You should see some of the keyword phrases that people search to find my website.

In a perfect world, every visitor to our website would be qualified to the nth degree, and every keyword phrase would convert to it`s optimum potential. Unfortunately, we don`t live in a perfect world.

Hey Dale, I knew you would answer that question. :)  Thank you. But still some of the phrases make me giggle. But... some how they find us, and the fact that we actually show up first for those phrases, is even funnier.:) Search engines are amazing.

You`re quite welcome. Hey Janie, look at some of the phrases people use to find my website:

1. article e-mail in business communication

2. real marketing help on the internet

3. how you do anything is how you do everything

4. reasons people want home based business

5. make sure no one has my business name

6. seminar marketing and best months

7. cheapest way to promote my ebooks on line

8. tiger woods greatest ever

9. successful copywriters include

10. 7 most popular money-making models on the internet

Here`s the funny thing, Janie, the guy who searched for  "tiger woods greatest ever" just started his own business selling golf clubs online and he hired me to help him with his promotion.

To borrow a line from the movie Robocop, "Business is where you find it!"

Thanks, Janie. It is pretty funny, but believe it or not, I`m # 5 on Google for that phrase. See for yourself:

Had to jump in here and share a couple of funny stats.  I`m obsessively checking my stats (need help!) and love finding the silly ones... of course I do check for the ones that I`m actually targeting as well ;)

here`s a good one:
thank god for googleoprah -- hehe... they mean Google Oprah but boy if those two joined forces they could take over the world!

and another:
assistant wanted millionaire -- now I`m not sure if they want an assistant who`s a millionaire (HA, right!) or if they are a millionaire and want an assistant but either way sounds good to me!

Hope I didn`t hijack your tread!  I just LOVE stats..hehe.

Some phrases with clicks seem to come from posts here too.

correct me if I`m wrong, but isn`t your #5 more attributed to it being a weird and exact search where you have that phrase as a page name; and no doubt multiple instances of it within the page, and links, and, and ... all of which you would instruct someone to use on their site.  (I filter "by in title of page" and you`re #2! [out of 211, and also #2 when filtered by "in URL" to 24 sites].

imho none of this is bad, as long as you didn`t pay for that click (excluding the above examples where that`s the whole idea and therefore moot point to o.i.) and you are selling your "brand" ... they are also going to be doing a "how did that get me to this site" and you must have a legitimate reason for that click.

Maybe someone blogged you and the search phrase was also on the page about you ... maybe it`s a vegetarian ranting about your tofo jerkey being the greatest thing ever, but s/he`s "the bomb" for dancing with the stars and so when someone asks about "A" they also see "B" exactly because an element of the "A" data is so powerful that it empowers ripples in the force (trust the force Luke! LOL)

Janie, it is interesting to see search phrases that pop up in your stats. Key off on the ones that your, as a consumer, would use ... without any knowledge about The House of Jerky. And congrats on the increase in traffic ... it will eventually pay off in sales. You and I both know ... its a numbers game.

In other words, for Miss Avg Consumer ... what search phrases would they use if they were searching for jerky?

I recall a thread way back when that talked about rankings and search phrases and that this one particular web site was poo-poohed by a few here because their search rankings were very high ... but within a particular niche market.

Well look at this now ... google the phrase ...

trucking accessories ...

and look what you get. Remember that Iowa80.com is the largest on-line trucking store in the country and Iowa 80 is the largest truckstop in the country.

Gee.... "and they all laughed at Christopher Columbus when he said the world was round".

Ta-Ta.
