with all the start up costs associated with a new company and internet/retail sales driven product, can a d&b number be put on hold or just added to the price of starting up right out of the box...responses appreciated..thanks

That depends on your business, but generally it is not necassary.

You should at least get the free number; it`s easy and you can do it online (granted you have to make sure you`re getting the free one as they are trying to sell you on their services; which you don`t need until you get rolling and all that jazz).  Go here, do it, and get to your next thing that needs to get done! Absolutely go with Chris`s advice and get the free number - it will be of use to you most likely.  I think it takes like 30 days to be active.  Some of your vendors and customers may require it.

Ya, getting the free number is definitely a good idea to start out. I would start setting up trade tape accounts that report automatically to DNB that way you can start to establsih a strong business credit score. If you use the right accounts, you do not have to pay DNB.
