I own a proprietary software development company. I’m taking a career change now, but when I was developing software, I wouldn’t develop anything until after I knew what my client needed. I would check out some fortune 500 companies that may be using out-of-date software and or hardware and I would make a proposal based on how much money I could save them by updating their equipment. Now this takes lot of work. You have to most likely speak with the owners (president or chief executive officer) or directors of these companies and find out what areas are hurting or costing them money. After that information is gain, make a very professional looking presentation (include graphs and make it look good). Indicate if you developed real time inventory control they can save this much (percentage based), if you developed like a customer based payroll structure they can save this much (percentage based again). Help their data analytical department compile their spreadsheets with this software, they can save this much (percentage based).

What I would do then is generate a three year contract (you might want to generate a year contract, with how the economy is) and say that you’ll take 5% of everything that you’re saving them monthly.

That’s what I use to do.

If you are looking for new ideas for online start-ups, may I suggest the site: http://www.SmarterLeap.com

SmarterLeap aids entrepreneurs with a constant inflow of worthy ideas. These ideas spring from a network of Idea Architects - smart, creative people who submit ideas yet to be developed in the business world. Far from pure fancy, each idea must be doable and is screened for its revenue potential, investment requirements, competitive advantage and other criteria. (For more on this proprietary process, see https://www.smarterleap.com/TheDifference.php)

Many of the ideas on SmarterLeap.com are new web-based concepts.
