I`m starting the same thing, and looking into eBook publishing. There are free PDF converters you can use to start. They won`t have the security to protect your writing, so go with something small to start.

There are sites that will hold and sell your eBook, apparently, and that should get you some capital. After you`ve begun to get some money, then you can move to the next step of possibly self-publishing your own hardcopy. At least that`s my strategy...we`ll see if it works! :-)

The more research I do, particularly with my background of having a published and successful book, the more I`ve pondered this. Your question is basically, "How do I protect my ebook from being copied, then uploaded for free by someone else?"

Here`s what I`m going to do. I don`t HAVE an ebook right now, so it`s not going to be copied, stolen, ripped off, or robbed. :-) And so my FIRST intent and call to action is: "Write a book!"

AFTER I`ve written an ebook, say about 20-25 pages, THEN I`ll worry about how to get it published in such a way as to make some money, and not have it ripped off. See?

I think we`re both putting the cart before the horse. Let`s write a book first, then see how to get it into publishing format. From there we`ll see what we come up with in terms of how much to make, say, 1,000 copy print run. I`ll bet the local MinuteMan Press would be happy to work with me on that, for an affordable price.

But I also want to finance that hardcopy print run from money I make from eBook downloads. And to do that, I have to have something to download, right?

Here`s an excellent tutorial and instruction reference for Nvu. Nvu has no built-in help, but this site is exceptionally well put-together, and very useful.

For the hardcopy print, assuming you have a cover designed for it, consider a local printing business. With so much being done online, desktop publishing, and modern copy machines, those standalone printing companies are hurting. They`re looking for ways to diversify, and I`ll bet you could work out a deal on the printing.

Keep in mind a book has the writing (author), editing, and copyrighting. But then comes the printing (layout, design, print), and then distribution. A publishing company handles everything from the editing downward. But self-publishing isn`t impossible.

The hardest problem is the distribution. When I looked into self-publishing, I began to uncover a huge network of distribution channels, and more importantly, the self-owned "mom-and-pop" bookstores! These still exist, and they`re NOT the massive outlets such as Barnes & Noble.

I didn`t pursue it because I haven`t yet got the book. But it`s there. Do a Google search on "self publish book" and you`ll find plenty of places to start.
