Hello.

I’ve been working on making improvements to my website and would like to get some feedback.  I’m using Microsoft Office Live so I am kind of limited in what I can do.

It is particularly important to me that it be easy to navigate, and that the content is clear and easy to read because my target audience is, for the most part, just getting used to going on-line for information, doesn’t have a lot of time, and English may not be  her first language.

I appreciate any ideas and recommendations you all have to offer.

Thank you,

Natalie

Natalie, I am not a web designer, nor is my website great, that being said I offer the following questions to you, who are you exactly consulting too? ( my first impression was you connected familys and providers but I couldn`t find a page for that) what exactly are you offering? (it appears your site is another affiliate outlet) why do the menu options change on pages? (office live lets you subordinate page specific menu items without changing the main options) are you part of the government? ( there is at least one page that looks like a city website right down to the seal).

I agree with Stan that reading the home page leaves me confused. There a bunch of content snippets, but none of them give me a good overview of exactly what service you provide.
  • One of the first things I noticed was the BAFCC image and link. Clicking that takes me away from your site (never good). And to make it worse, that site has some bad code that has broken the browser Back button, so it is hard for me to get back to your site once I realize what has happened. Anytime you link to another site add a target="_blank" attribute to the link tag so that it opens in a new window/tab. That way your users will not loose your site. But, I would make the BAFCC link less prominent.
  • The title of your home page is simply "Home". That does not help with search engines.
  • You have no meta tags. That really isn`t going to help with search engines.
  • There is a spot in your html that there are about 100 nested duplicate font tags.
  • You are using several fonts styles, colors, and sizes. It makes the page look a little random.
  • I am also very confused why you are using a bunch of iframes on the home page.

Thank you for your feedback!

You are correct that one of my biggest issues is that it is confusing who my clients actually are. My “paying clients” are the city of San Francisco and non-profits who fund the programs I administer.  But, the information on my website is directed at my real clients, family child care providers.  In all the programs I work with, my goal is to provide technical assistance to the providers themselves.

Stan, I changed the menu options because I didn’t like the office live menu color options and size.  I am definately open to suggestions for improving my changes.

Nate, thank you for the tip on opening links in a new window!  I did a test with the BAFCC link and I will go back later and do the same with other links on my site.

The title of your home page is simply "Home" – That was something I should have caught on my own!  Thanks!

These, I am going to have to do some reading up on, because I don’t really have a clue what you are talking about:

You have no meta tags. That really isn`t going to help with search engines.

There is a spot in your html that there are about 100 nested duplicate font tags.

I am also very confused why you are using a bunch of iframes on the home  page

Thanks again, this has been incredibly helpful.

Natalie
