A friend says that her house smells like an ashtray even after a thorough cleaning. Any ideas on how to remove the odor, not just cover it up?

Find a local EcoQuest dealer.  They sells Air purifiers that will remove cigarette smells like nothing else.  It doesn`t cover them up, it actually removes them.

I`m a dealer and could get you one but it would be better to find a local dealer who can really offer service...

Hey Ross, I had to go back and look at your profile, after your post.  Guess, you`re involved in many things! I saved the Ecoquest site, because Ron smokes like crazy, and sometimes inside. (: I`ll check it out.

But, also miabellacandles, keep selling your candles!  They help to cover it up.

You could check out the Marketplace section of this forum, or do a search for residential air cleaners

No matter which way your friend goes, be sure that they understand that activated carbon is the only way to remove odors.

Feel free to click the link in my signature to read more about air cleaners.

I`m not looking to start an argument here but... and although activated carbon may be effective, it is not the only way...

Here`s a couple more links for you:

Somebody should tell the folks at Fresh Air to put a BUY button somewhere in there lol

Or at the very least let us know how much it costs, I`ve been up and down both those sites and can`t find out what are they selling that stuff for.

You are correct, Ross, and I will correct my statement.

Activated carbon is not the only way to remove odors and gasses from indoor air, but it is the safest and most effective other than source control and outdoor ventilation.

Which is, of course, not completely true either.  Obviously I think we can agree that source control is truly the most effective.  And I also agree that outdoor ventilation is also much better than activated carbon, which is why the Fresh Air by EcoQuest is such a great product.  It doesn`t remove odors by filtering the air, (although it does offer minor filtration), it removes odor by purifying the air the way nature does, almost as if you had full-time outdoor ventilation.  Of course, this applies even in the winter when outdoor ventilation can prove a bit chilly in some parts of the country...

It uses space technology originally developed by NASA and is proven to kill a number of bacteria and fungi on surfaces, something filters just can`t do.

In any case, I just realized this is turning into a sales pitch, which I don`t want it to be so I`ll end my involvement in this discussion with these last words:

Miabella - I just suggest you do the research and choose what you feel is right for you.

ElidS - you can only purchase the products through a dealer and there are a number of products to suit different applications, if you`re truly interested, send me a personal message and I`d be glad to answer an questions you may have including pricing...

Thanks!

I appreciate all the input and will pass it along to my friend. She lives in rural Montana, which might make finding a local dealer a bit of a challenge. That old adage, "Where there`s a will, there`s a way" still holds true today.

Ross, I lived on Oahu from mid-1986 to mid-1991. The first year was on the 37th floor of an apartment on Bishop Street, and the rest of the time was in the Salt Lake district. The double rainbows were literally awesome. Which island are you on?
