I don`t see much on this here at startupnation. I use it 2 or 3 times a day.
Do you know what it is and how to use it?

I`ll take that as a no. Free adverts n is putting your name out in front of customers without having to pay for it. There are tons of magazines out there for each type of business. They are called "house organs".  Very often you can answer an editorial and include your company name. A press release in a magazine or news paper often works too. Though the industry magazines are better as they target the type of customer your after to start with.
I`m more than a little surprised the experts here haven`t already jumped on this one.

When I first came to Texas, former soldier, I met a Lady whose favourite expression was "Free is good".  I have to agree.  When youare in business and advertising is your greatest expense, you have to find ways to keep expense down.  So, that having been said, could you please expound on exactly how one goes about finding these "house organs"?

First let me remind you, I am a consultant. This is but a micron of what I can do for my clients. Membership in Startupnation  IS free advertising. Use it.

Every industry has a publication.  Tradepub.com is a clearing house  for these in manufacturing.  Fill out forms with a little bs and you get the magazine for free. For others you`ll have to dig just as I did. That or you could  pay me to.
I consult on manufacturing processes,  photography/graphic arts, and DIY(Do-it-yourself). My tag line for DIY is Dr.DIY.    This would be DIY businesses.

Many Startup Nation members are using a wide variety of "free" advertising as noted in previous threads.

My mom, who had a career as a PR professional (as did my dad and sister), always says "Why pay for something if you can get it for free?"

Over the years I`ve used press releases, article writing (for international magazines, trade publications, web-zines and house organs), speaking engagements, industry organization participation, pro bono work, free directory listings and participation in online communities as "free" advertising methods.  In fact, for quite a few years now I`ve been paid to write magazine articles and make conference presentations - so I`m actually getting paid to market and promote my own business.

Contacting publications within your industry is a great way to position oneself as an "expert" in the field and promote your own efforts.  Besides, many publication editors are starving for possible content.  Developing relationships with industry writers and editors will benefit a business in many ways.

Free advertising is mentioning your goals or objectives as part of your conversation to everyone you speak to. On the net or in person. If you live your passion, your expertise will shine. Your shine will attract others looking for your help.

I am always talking about "the next objective for ElusiveTreasures.com... sometimes, I have to remember to shut up. But really. I need help from others in terms of buyers, programmers and the like. This means I need to let people know what I am looking for that will help me. If my plan is solid, and the help falls into place, my business is surely ahead of the person who doesn`t "advertise."
