‘BusinessWeek’ explores `Business YouTube` venture

Story posted: May 29, 2007 - 2:58 pm EDT

Miami—BusinessWeek is exploring the launch of “Business YouTube,” a user-generated site that would allow entrepreneurs to post online videos of proposed business ventures. The proposed site was announced by John Byrne, executive editor of BusinessWeek, during the Interactive Media Conference in Miami last week. Under the proposed venture, users could vote on the best business idea, with the winner receiving up to $500,000 in venture capital funding.

Hey Rich,

Yeah I do. Video is probably the best way to introduce new products/ideas, also since it works on a popular vote concept only the products with the most mass appeal would end up on top and get funding. The exposure may also bring some type of funding for second and third tier products.

:-) Well, it`s a great idea. That`s the first point.

The second point is that if you think people believe they`re writers, wait until you see how many people believe they`re a dynamic video presence! LOL! It`ll be interesting, I think, having seen many home movies in my lifetime.

On the serious side, the key is going to be searchability. That`s going to require that anyone posting a video also have some sort of text description. Who`ll figure that out?

It`s not a problem for the developers, they`ll make plenty of money. It`ll be a problem for anyone trying to actually make sense of the tidal wave of video propositions.

As a business person, to be honest, what do I care if someone can find a video presentation? What I`d be selling is the *dream.* That`s the big selling point for most things---the dream that if someone puts up a video of their presentation, Donald Trump or Oprah Winfrey will immediately see it and call them up, offering them money.

I don`t really play the lotto. To me this seems like business lotto. Post a video and fingers crossed.

I believe more in getting down and dirty and making your business happen.
