Yes definitely Facebook and other social media sites helps to increase traffic of your site. it is true and good practice.
Social Networking sites are great for traffic, but they are even better for building a following.
When companies use them for traffic, they tend to do it very poorly. They will have a post like:
Check out this great sale at www.mysalesite.com. 30-40% off most things seems crazy!
This is straight up, an advertisement and no body cares. It will actually hurt your authority because people will start to see you as someone that is just trying to sell rather than interact and help.
Instead you want to give them useful info, like point them to a review that points at your site. ( you can even write the review.. or pay someone to do it... like on squidoo or hubpages)

I actually reached SuN off of a newsletter discussing a topic on Social Media. This particuliar topic discussed other "social" avenues such as SuN. The article I am mentioning can be found here: http://www.openforum.com/idea-hub/topics/marketing/article/13-ways-to-network-beyond-facebook-and-linkedin-john-jantsch
To stay on topic.. social media when used effectively is great. Not only can it assist in directing traffic to your site/product/service.. but it is also a great way to establish/maintain brand recognition. Another big point, especially with a startup is that many of the social media sites are free and give you access to endless amount of potential customers.
Social networking sites allow you to make friends, develop bsuiness replationships and get involved in groups and activities that fit your needs. You can promote your business by sending updates to all your contacts.
yes i am getting traffic in huge quantity from facebook and Stumble Upon ilove both of Site.
Facebook is the best for me and I think for everyone. It's the new wave in marketing your business.
twitter and FB have both been instrumental to my success. when possible, link the sites and get more bang for every bit of effort. for ex, i have my FB and TW linked. all blog posts are distributed automatically to FB, which sends a tweet to my twitter account
definitely social bookmaking sites like facebook, twitter, diqq, stumbleupon etc generate huge traffic to your website
