...hello all

i have a question for this group... my web designer suggests i come up with a "privacy policy."  i have looked at quite a few and expect she will be guiding me, but without hiring an attorney, my site and line of goods www.roadragejewelry.com is not very complicated.  my site is going to have a newsletter which will garner info, but i am at a loss as to what actually is needed.  my cart will be through authorize net; i will have their "seal" as to merchant transactions, but there has got to be a relatively basic policy that i can utilize...i do not intend on "selling" any info so any suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks to all .. legsx3

There is no legal requirement for a privacy policy, and if you get a lawyer involved, it will become an impossible to read ten-page document.  (They charge by the letter).

Keep it simple.  "We will never share your personal information with anyone.  Ever.  Period."

There are fairly "standard" privacy policy samples that you can use... modify to fit what you do or do not do.

A simple search should provide you with something useful.

You want your privacy policy to gain your customer`s trust, so keep it simple.  Google has 36 separate privacy policies, each with over 2,000 words of boilerplate.  Seeing a long privacy policy makes one suspect that there`s exceptions built into the fine print - it hardly encourages trust.

I completely agree with Steve and Roland... just keep it simple.  There are many privacy policies located through search.  Startupnation has a pretty simple on as well.

Oh here it goes,
First of all? before you jump on your MS Word, ask yourself a few questions:
  1. What am I trying to protect?
  2. Who am I protecting myself from?
  3. Will I be using cookies or sessions to store customer`s data? do I want to tell the customer?
  4. Will I be collecting Personal Information?
  5. What about Billing Info and Credit Card? How do I handle Credit Cards?
From the looks of your domain name, I think you`re going to need more than just Privacy Policy.
Youre going to need: (if its an Ecommerce Site)
  1. Privacy Policy
  2. Terms of Use or Conditions of Use
  3. Shipping and Handling / Returns
In your privacy statement: just assure that customer that you won`t sell their information and that you protect their information and that you do not sell it to third parties.

In the terms of Use: Basically what you expect from the customer. They are different than a privacy statement

Shipping and Handling: Well spell out how you want to handle returns. You can have the customer call in and request an RMA (Returned Merchandise Acceptance). If they have to pay for their shipping or not. What is acceptable and what`s not... for example since you sell Jewelry, are you going to accept any type of earings back? what about tounge rings? and so forth?

Just spell out how you will run your business.... thats all, you don`t need a lawyer...
