Episode Spotlight

Jeff Taylor had a vision.  He wanted to take what he learned as a founder of Monster.com and apply it to a new niche.  The baby boomers he was targeting 15 years ago are now part of a group of people who need help “graduating” into the next phase of their life.  With this in mind, Jeff started Eons, a media company that helps the over-50 crowd embrace the spirit of aging gracefully and securely.

There are 10,000 people turning 50 every day.  In Jeff’s mind, there is a lot of untapped energy and creativity coming out of this group.  So he homed in on three converging trends: technology, a growing marketplace and an increased lifespan.  At the vertex is Eons.  At the company’s inception, Jeff asked himself one important question: What are the pillars of your life that matter?  For the Eons crowd, there are four:

  • Do I have enough money to live the rest of my life with security?
  • Am I healthy and do I experience an overall sense of well-being?
  • Do I have love and companionship?
  • Am I having fun?
Answering yes to these questions is the essence of the Eons philosophy of marrying a better job with a better life.  In Jeff Taylor’s world, the most important thing one can do to position him or herself for successful entrepreneurship is to “show up and be active and present.  Let’s live to be 100 or die trying.”

One of the nice things in getting older (becoming one of society`s elders) is the global outlook---the long view, so to speak. Young people may be faster, stronger, and have more endurance, but we older folk are craftier! I think older folks starting a business are much more objective about what will make money, produce a return, or help society stay civilized. Younger folks, I believe, will tend to be more into the short-term, immediate results, and satisfying their personal ego. ...

Jeff Taylor is targeting the over-50 demographic. I`m gettin` there! I`m 45 now and am reading a book on health & fitness for living like 50 until you`re 80 - figured I`d get a head start! Here`s my question: do you think that people in the over-50 age range will target significantly different types of businesses to start than the under-50 folks?I`m not so sure. Older people get continuously more world wise, and younger people tend to have more unbridled energy. But does that mean that they`d...
