Does anybody know how to approach a national company with a new use for one of there existing products?

You sneak up on them!

Just joking! Put together a comprehensive, all inclusive business proposal/plan for this company and/or product. Then start to approach the company via emails, phone calls, or try to find someone you know that knows someone within the company to set up a meeting.

Of course they`d like you to tell them and give you a dollar for it.

No, first of all it`s likely they have you sign a release stating that they have no obligation to compensate you for whtever you disclose to them.  They won`t sign NDA, typically.

To make money out of your idea of new use, you need to file a patent application BEFORE talking to them to protect your right.

Typically a company sticks to their knitting, i.e. existing distribution channels.  More progressive and agressive ones may develop new channel if the new market is big enough to make it worthwhile, say 10 billion dollars.  But then if the market for the new use were that big, you may consider doing it for your own profit, because then you can just buy wholesale from them and sell retail, without having to worry about manufacturing.

This reply if very interesting.  The problem is that the product is in over the counter medicine, and probably by law needs different test done or something  before it could be marketed to the public.  I`m not sure where to go to find out about this type of thing.

If it`s already OTC then your`re home free.

An example of contrary is Botox, a poison.  Yet doctors use them as beauty treatment (de-wrinkle)

Supposed you discover OTC A and B together is better than Viagra.  If I were you I`d become rich with such discovery .

If you have a good idea, make sure your ideas are protected before you contact a larger company that could copy it.  Individuals and companies lose great ideas all the time and have no recourse when it happens.  In most cases NDA`s are not the best solution for good protection either.  They are only a part of the total package.  My best advice is to seek out a patent attorney first.  Many will give you free advice up front on how you can proceed so they can get your business to get the job done.

Being well protected can lead to a much greater profit for your ideas.  Getting to the right person in a company is pretty easy after you get your ideas protected.

Good Luck!

I dont understand,

If I produce a product and someone comes up with a different use for this product,  How would someone protect that secondary use idea?

Does that mean a consumer can`t purchase my product and use it as they desire, meaning the secondary use.

Take a look at all the leaks that happen from the government,  A few posts online on a few blogs and before you know it the news is out.

I would think

There`re plenty of examples about "new use"

Botox is a poisin, but it can also be used in de-wrinkle process. Suppose you made Botox but I got a method patent on using Botox for de-wrinkle at specific concentrations.  I can buy Botox from you and sell it under my brand but you can`t market the same for de-wrinkle.

OK,  I`m not even going to try to figure this out,  or will I?

I have discovered that if I put baking soda In my hair on a daily basis I will not have dandruff. Also that I use it as a treatment against lice,   kills the little buggers  instantly.  Does that mean if I have a method patent , the customers who purchase arm and hammer baking soda  can not use it as a hair treatment,,,, or it that they can`t marketing their product as a hair treatment...?  ???

Problem is baking soda has been around for a long time, and although you discover recently its power against dandruff, some other people may have done the same too, although you don`t know them.  The other issue is a patent only gives you the right to sue the infringer(s), an expensive process, while the defender(s) may be numerous and broke - the more well-off use brand name shampoo, not the type sold in Wal-Mart.

Lemelson - the most prolific inventor in the world - only sued the biggest corporations such as GM, and never the small fries.  BTW Lemelson never manufacturered any product.  He became rich with his "bar code" patent called "Machine Vision"
