Episode Spotlight
StartupNation’s Rich Sloan visits Sam Carpenter in this third and final episode covering the author’s new book, “Work the System: The simple mechanics of working less and making more.”
This episode drills down on documentation. Yes, this topic was touched on in episode one with Carpenter, but the subject is so important that we go deeper on the three separate documents. They’re likened to the familiar 1) Declaration of Independence, 2) the Constitution, and 3) the laws of the land.
Document one is called “Strategic Objectives,” aptly compared to the Declaration of Independence. It outlines the “who you are and where you’re headed.” It’s a one-pager.
Document two for your business is called “Operating Principles,” which compares to the Constitution. It’s a document that, in Carpenter’s case, has 30 principles and every employee is required to memorize—and live by—them.
The third document is titled, “Working Principles.” This is a very dynamic document that adapts to the working environment—true to the times—and provides daily guidelines to work and live by.
Today Carpenter owns a company called Centratel, but spends only two hours a week running the business. And yes, he makes more today than ever before…
