Selling Out on QVC Decade of Discoveries

Sharing the QVC spotlight is Nicholas Woodman, inventor of the GoPro Hero Camera. Nicholas is one of the top 100 finalists of the QVC Product Search 2005, and he made his QVC debut on July 8th at the first stop on the Decade of Discoveries Tour.

What inspired you to invent the GoPro Hero Camera?

Nicholas Woodman’s successful QVC debut experience.

I came up with the concept for the Hero Camera while trying to make it easy to shoot photos of my friends during our favorite sports and activities. I was frustrated with having to choose whether to be a "photographer" or a "participant" each time. I set to work on designing a camera and strap system that would allow me to enjoy all of those activities with a camera available at a moment's notice. Once I began developing it, I realized the concept had commercial potential.

At what stage of development is your invention?

GoPro began in my room in 2002, and I incorporated it in 2003 and filed patents, trademarks, etc. The first  US patent (several have been filed) relating to the invention was approved by the USPTO a couple of weeks ago.

The Hero Camera hit the market in September 2004 at the Action Sports Trade show ( ASR ) in San Diego . The Hero Camera was a finalist in ISPO’s (largest European sporting goods trade group) Brand New Awards, July 2005. We used this award and trade show in Munich, Germany to launch the Hero Camera in Europe. The Hero Camera is selling in hundreds of specialty sports retailers and select resort destinations in the US , Australia , Japan and the UK , and distribution is set to begin soon in Europe .

What is your involvement with QVC?

The Hero Camera was one of 100 products identified by QVC's Product Search 2005 contest. It sold out (and then some) at the first stop of the Decade of Discoveries tour on July 8th in Philadelphia , PA. QVC marked the US mass market national launch for the Hero Camera.
