Necessity is the mother of invention, and koobli is the invention so many mothers need! Lisa Belzberg’s experience as a busy working mother of six gave her plenty of insight into the world of stains --- from spills or spit-up during meal-time to dirty hands during play-time. It made her think: wouldn’t it be great to have an easy-to-wear, throw-on/throw-off garment that would protect her clothes during the often messy meal - and play - time hours? Even more important than saving time and money on laundry and dry cleaning, some type of “clothing cover-up” would provide additional precious, uninterrupted moments with her children. This gave her the inspiration and purpose for creating a practical solution, which her business partner Erin Pace named koobli.
They conducted focus groups and met extensively with moms and dads who are teachers, mechanics, accountants, cops, firemen, bank executives, news anchors, athletes and lawyers. Everyone they spoke with instantly recognized the need for a product solely dedicated to protect clothes from spills, stains, dirt and many other unpredictable messes (as well as something that would be environmentally conscious). The feedback they gained prompted Lisa to move forward.
When research was complete it was clear that Lisa's concept for a sensible garment to protect clothes would be an indispensable accessory for parents, grandparents and caregivers. In addition, she discovered that there were numerous other pragmatic uses, such as serving as a cover-up while eating in a car, hosting an arts & crafts party, washing out a fish tank or shampooing the dog.
Inspired, her next step was to search far and wide for soft and cozy material that could offer protection from foods and liquids without them soaking through. It also had to be inexpensive, reusable, environmentally friendly, fashionable in a utilitarian way, and offer sizes to fit both men and women. Following an extensive design process as well as inspecting, testing and re-testing, koobli™ was born.
Lisa Belzberg not only gathered feedback from her community, but she also used her day-to-day role as multi-tasking mom and founder of New York City’s very successful PENCIL Principal For A Day (PFAD) program as inspiration for her new product. Her resourcefulness and passion for this product comes from a personal place, her dedication to families and children. She has demonstrated remarkable tenacity in her mission to create a useful, well-made and chic product that is helping make the lives of busy working parents like herself easier and increasing the quality of time spent with their kids. We appreciate you considering Dr. Lisa Belzberg for the Leading Moms in Business Award. Her hard work, dedication and inspiration are a rarity in the current entrepreneur business arena.
