Contestant's Case to Win

My name is Honi Borden and I am the founder of the Holeco™ Wellness Medi Spa, the first Holistic/Organic Medical Spa in the United States recognized by Green America (formerly known as Co-op America) as a socially responsible green company. My medical spa was the first to be listed in the National Green Pages directory (it still is the only one) with the mission to provide aesthetic beauty from inside out by honoring one's health and keeping the environment in mind.

To get this seal of approval from Green America, a business must go through months of rigorous screening to demonstrate that it is a green business and dedicated to healthy living.

The turning point for me came several years ago when both of my children (Kiyan is now 8 ½ and Nevan is 5 ½), along with my husband Karl, developed horrific skin allergies (severe dermatitis & eczema). I was incredibly disappointed that the doctors only recommended continuous medication, in particular steroid creams. I knew something else was the cause of all this unnecessary heartache. That’s when I opened Pandora’s box and started to seriously research and learn about the effects Toxins/chemicals can cause; I learned that we are all exposed to toxins on a daily basis as they are found in every day products, i.e. shampoo, conditioner, soap, cleanser, cream, etc. I could not close the box now that it was open, and I began to channel my frustration into an amazing learning experience. After changing my entire household into an eco-friendly, non-toxic environment, I brought that knowledge into my medical spa in early 2007. Thus, all the products we carry are toxic free and safe for the people and the planet. Out of my own frustration for the lack of safe beauty products in the market, I have created my own line of non-toxic products called Holeco™ Life, several of which have already been launched.

The majority of businesses I work with are women owned and operate using “fair trade principals”. Both of the charities I support make amazing efforts with respect to sustainability and keeping the environment green (Earth Conservation Corp. & International Lifeline Fund).

This has been a very challenging experience due to the fact that when it comes to aesthetic beauty, not enough has been done to keep products non-toxic and earth friendly and there is remains a lack of widespread acceptance in the US. I view Holeco™ Wellness Medi Spa as a vehicle for teaching and helping our clients understand what it means to live a green and organic life, and encourage positive change to our clients’ mindsets so that they honor health above all else. There is absolutely no need for us to damage our health because we want to achieve beauty. We especially want to educate our pregnant and nursing moms so that they know which treatments and products are safe for them and their babies. This is why I work very closely with a group of holistic practitioners both in my spa and out of the spa to further educate our clients. I believe that to change the environment, one MUST take care of one's own health first; only then can we do a better job in taking care of the planet.
