Hi, I`m new to the community.  I`m in the process of creating a free adult site, that will hopefully generate profits through affiliate sign-ups.

I want to get a sense of how the members of startupnation feel about the adult website industry.  Are you ok with it, or would want nothing to do with it?  I feel it is a viable e-business, the market is large.

Also any tips, advice or legal advice would be greatly appreciated ;)!

I`ll send a shout out with the domain when the site is up in few days.

Thank You!

As far as I`m concerned, an adult Web site is pretty much like any other business or Web site. I don`t have moral issues with the sites, but I suspect you`ll have a difficult time from a business perspective.

From what I see, sex and games (electronic) are driving computer technology, for the most part, in many important ways. To that end, there are so many sex sites it`s almost impossible to differentiate. You can try the free idea, but I really wonder if you`re going to get the affiliates. It`ll depend on your business plan, market research, and eventually, your content.

For me I don`t think I have the focus to run a business in adult pleasure. However as a red blooded american male I have been know to frequent one or two.
Here is your biggest problem as I see it, everyone that trys to find free porn (lets be frank here) ends up on a site that doesn`t have free porn or has it but you get slammed with trojans, and spyware adverts. even with firewalls, this SH** seems to get through. so clicking through to your googleads "ain`t" something most anyone would do. Maybe for the more savvy vouyer but they probably aren`t going to buy anything `cause if they can get through the attacks they can get the sites for free anyway.
I don`t know, but a free adult site makes little sense as a business to me, unless you are infecting your customer computers. why not have quality content and charge for membership?

just a thought

Lawrence,
I don`t think anyone here on SUN cares what type of business you run. From what I understand, SUN was created by Entrepreneurs for Entrepreneurs, and you aren`t any different than the rest of us.

The only difference is that you are catering to a multi-million dollar industry "that is over-saturated" and it`s very difficult to reach to the top without you having to piggy-back on other websites, and like wtgg mention, most of them are porn - loop holes, that are used by hackers to get your information. I am not trying to discourage you, I have plenty of friends that are in the adult web design industry and they are currently out of work.

Again, it can be done! you just need to know what you are doing and what you`re offfering.. What exactly are you offering?

Edgar pulls it together with clarity and brevity (something I was known for only in previous incarnations). :-) ".....you are catering to a multi-million dollar industry "that is over-saturated""

I think if you catered to a specific niche, it may give you an advantage over those sites that cover just general content.

What niche, though? Every conceivable fetish already also is saturated, from what I`ve seen. Is there a difference (in this context) between a niche and a fetish?

It`s very hard to decide on a niche, I agree, it is very over saturated.

To sum up this is what I am offer:

I will be using the Joomla content management system.  I will be focusing on daliy updates, with my own text content to include, jokes, articles with sites I do affilate marketing for such as interviews with the girls.  Daily updates also include, galleries with content provided from sponsors, revenue will then be generated from referal sales to these sponsors.  The website will also try to host a weekly review of an adult site.  A VOD(Video on Demand) section is offered through a partner, it ears 20% sales, and will appear as part of my site.  It will also include a adult shop, that will be run by drop shipping.  Finally a forum will be included.

I concur with Wtgg, in that although guys don`t usually talk about their porn-cruising skills and methods, there does seem to be a commonality there. It`s mostly "show me da nekkit babes!"

I really wonder if content matters, unless it`s X-rated stories? For meeting people and forums, there already are places like AdultFriendFinder and other such sites. So how will your site differentiate?

Daily articles---I wonder who`ll read them? Jokes abound on all kinds of other sites, not to mention being mailed around constantly. Maybe the interviews with women, but in what sense?

It`s not that it can`t be done, and certainly it could make money: The big question is still the differentiation (for visibility). Even the review of other adult sites has been done countless times, y`know? Again...not to say there`s anything wrong with the idea, but to focus on how to make the idea actually work.

Interesting topic.  I`ve heard user generated content is king in the new world, but I think your concept here may make filter king; too much of a good thing is bad (from what little I know, there`s stuff that just doesn`t need to be indexed).  I try to skim these sites every few months to stay current on the tech (saturation breeds USPs) but what I fail to see is a basic understanding on search and I bet if you worked something like that and a condensed view of cars.com you`d be able to create portal type traffic ... not sure if your open source is going to work there, but it could be fun if you`re able to execute something in this market; I`d much rather follow breadcrumbs than Craig`s favorites! (and you`ll only need a few months becuase of the saturation/churn of the eyes; AFF et. al. are media conglomerates and they buy/build mkt share).  Have fun.
