Honestly, the only advise I recommend for you if completely relying on a website developers work is to make the project transparent.
........ Most people are unaware of how backwards the webdesign industry is and how exceedingly rare it is to meet a true expert. Most just do half ass work, confident in the mystery and aura of programming and SEO to cover their tracks.

However, if you document each step of the design process on a forum or something - you are ensuring that at least you have a motivated designer working for you.
......... As for myself, I do all my design work in photoshop, get a freelancer to do all the programming and heavy lifting :)

May be you had a bad experience with a web designer/developer. You statement is quiet bold "most do half ass work".  I think some people in the industry and clients may not agree.

True, you could probaly find many designers that will quote you a low price, and just throw up a website, and leave you.  But, it`s a complete different experience when you do work with an expert in this field. I would NEVER think about doing my own site, without having the knowledge and experience that is needed, to exist and succeed on the internet. Thank God, for proffesionals in this field!

Janie

p.s. thanks Roland

Roland,

You are right, I have no right to judge the field or profession as a whole.

But you are easily one of the most knowledgeable designers I have encountered in most of the forums I participate in. While you clearly have an understanding of marketing, as well as design - how could someone completely new to e-commerce distinguish that you have actual expertise. Go to any freelancer website, everyone claims to be an expert. I`ve seen people posting their web design website for review on forums before, admit they were completely new, and then market themselves as an expert on said website.
.......Never the less, I am sorry for offending you.

Janie, you are very fortunate that Roland designed your website. Perhaps you did due diligence, in which case I give you my compliments.

Yes, unfortunately people can get good and bad results by using the varous freelancer sites.

Finding a good person to work with is not an easy task. As has been discussed here and other forums, it is always good to check out the references of anyone you may choose AND have a long talk with them about your needs and goals for your website and your business.

The web designer certainly needs to have the skills, but there should be a "fit"...that is, find someone who you can work with as a partner interested in your website success.

Yes, I did my due diligence.  I had too, I learned from a couple of bad experiences I had with other developers.  So, I do agree, it can be difficult to find someone.  Forums can be very helpful.  I actually found Roland on another forum.  I read a lot of his posts before contacting him.  I  took a leap of faith.  After talking with him, I felt confident in his knowledge and experience.  I trusted him, which I find to be an important part in the decision factor.

and... we are a good fit! He is an integral part of our online success.

Also kudos to Nikole too. She spends a lot of time sharing, what she knows here.
