We're a mother-daughter team out to change the world one celebration at a time. Through our book, "Celebrate Green! Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations and Traditions for the Whole Family," as well as speaking on TV, radio and via blogs, newspapers and magazines, we're spreading the word that celebrating green can be simple, quick, inexpensive and fun! We believe in putting meaning in the greening and that celebrations should be good for people, the planet and communities.
We celebrate a lot in this country--the biggies like Christmas, Valentine's Day, Halloween to name just a few, plus special events like birthdays, weddings, baby showers, even office parties. That's why we believe that going green for celebrations is so important and can have a major positive impact. To be honest, we didn't start out to build a business. Corey's idea was to create change through a community initiative when she started, Green Halloween. This three year old initiative began in Seattle and is now a national phenomenon. This year, "official" Green Halloween activities will take place in New York City, the Bay area, Phoenix, to name a few. Unofficially, thousands of people across the country are implementing our ideas. Last year, in the two month period surrounding Halloween, we had 57,000 unique visitors at our website, so we know the need and desire is out there. Our ultimate goal is to create a not-for-profit business on the model of Paul Newman's, which can fund causes in which we believe. Already, we are committed to giving a portion of our profits to non-profits including Treeswing and Healthy Child Healthy World. In 2010, we expect to create a niche marketplace as well as begin licensing the Celebrate Green name to products. We have attracted national sponsors/advertisers including LaraBar and Cascadian Farm and believe our future lies in partnerships with companies that share our passion and vision. Our success stems from out ability to connect with people as a moms and in our ability avoid preaching (sometimes, we admit, it's hard!), and to offer alternatives that align with people's values whether they are newly green or confirmed environmentalists.Knowing that we inspire people based on who we are and our passion, is incredibly rewarding, but we also want and need to continue to build our business. Finding a balance between the desire to serve and creating a sustainable business to fund that, is our challenge.
