In my beloved America, I refuse to believe that if I’m out of work, I’m out of luck! So when my sisters—both biological and soul—and I found ourselves jobless, we did what any strong-minded, born-in-the-US women would do; we rolled-up our sleeves and started our own home-based business, turned my house upside down in the process, and convinced our husbands that made in the USA meant that on any given day, the scent of lavender and patchouli, peppermint and lemongrass, bubblegum and roses spelled the sweet smell of success. At Little Sisters Soap Company, we do business by the three Rs—reduce, reuse, and recycle and we treat all of our customers as loved family members. Leftover soap ingredients get molded into small gift soaps and find their way into customer orders as thank you surprises or get boxed up for donations to neighborhood charity programs. Our “Oops” soaps—the ones missing a ray of light from a sun design or a puff of smoke from a choo-choo stack design— are donated to local women’s shelters and abuse centers so that our sisters in need can get away from it all and experience a bit of luxury. There's nothing like a good, fragrant soak to clear your head and lift your spirits! We ship product (in biodegradable cello bags and recycled boxes and packing peanuts) to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we visit local daycares to teach kids to how to craft their own handmade soap creations. Out of state and returning students to our local colleges find our made-with-love soaps in welcome baskets. To do our part in keeping America working, we strive as much as possible to source our products from local North Carolina and US-based businesses. You might think that playing in bubbles all day is squeaky-clean fun, but we take making soap for our family of customers seriously. If we mess up a recipe or a batch of soap doesn’t pass our high quality control standards (each and every bar must pass stringent sniff tests), we retie our aprons and head back to the stove for another try. My sister Lynn and I learned from our Granny Minnie Pearl to take old-fashioned pride in whatever we cook up in our kitchens, but especially when cooking meals for company. We want our products to earn oohs and aahs from all of our customers—our soakers and handwashers alike. We also believe that our customers should get what they pay for and be delighted with their purchases. That’s why we stand behind our soap and guarantee each and every bar, bottle of lotion, and bath fizzable. One more thing, although, we have been very effective in reducing our overhead, reusing and recycling when possible, our waistlines are another matter! We figure with all this soap cooking going on, success in that department is just a bubble bath or two away.
