Modern Mermaids was loosely founded in late August of 2007. After Amy’s children were back in school and Audra had returned from an awe inspiring experience in Alaska, they sat down and thought about what they were going to do with their passion to change the world by creating non-toxic products, getting their mission known and somehow make a living doing it! Audra, an educator for holistic skin care companies, had a commitment on the West Coast for the month of September but continued to develop the business idea in airports and on planes. Meanwhile, Amy was busy buying the competition; no store that carried cleaners was safe as she filled her kitchen with products to test and compare. In the days that followed Audra’s return home, they had it figured out. They were going to use a natural combination of surfactants blended with pure essential oils that would not only smell wonderful but offer properties that aid the ability to clean. And then coincidentally Oct. 12 hit, Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize and the “green” movement officially began.

Amy and Audra (who had been an environmentalist long before it was fashionable) knew from that moment on there was no turning back and within two weeks made enough products to sell at Green Farmer’s Market around the Palm Beach Area of Florida. It was the best way to meet prospective customers, educate them about natural cleaners and introduce Modern Mermaids Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products. Having studied marketing in college, Audra thought that these markets was the absolute best and honest way to learn what today’s consumers need and want. They could personally watch their faces as they smelled the different essences and answer questions that sometimes came from the idea that “natural” won’t clean well enough. A mirror traveled with them for demonstration purposes.

In December, Amy and Audra needed to reevaluate the growth potential of Modern Mermaids as customers of all demographic groups were buying and enjoying the product. Having started in October, they watched as the market began to increase and competition became fierce. The knowledge that their products are superior to much of the competition has allowed them to remain confident in themselves and their products. And when people ask them why they think Modern Mermaids can compete with the major brands, they show them a bottle and say “ well, we think she’s pretty cute, don’t you?”
