About the Winner
Every Patient's Advocate came out of a personal experience and a determination to help people navigate the minefield of healthcare in America. When Trisha Torrey was diagnosed with a rare and deadly cancer in 2004, and then figured out on her own that she had no cancer at all, she made up her mind that she would do whatever she could to make sure others would learn to be savvy, smart patients and to ensure that they would not suffer at the hands of the dysfunctional American healthcare system. Today Torrey is doing just that. She writes a newspaper column, hosts a radio show, speaks across the country, writes for About.com, and teaches workshops to help patients learn to advocate for themselves. In effect, she's invented a career that hasn't existed before -- all in the name of helping others help themselves. And she does it from her home-based office.
