How the StartupNation Home-Based 100 companies were selected
The 2007 Home-Based 100 is a compilation of 10 Top Ten categories for privately held, U.S.-based businesses that are headquartered in homes. Each Top Ten category has a unifying theme.
All of the Top Ten categories—with the exception of Best Financial Performers—were judged and ranked by the StartupNation editorial staff based on how well they reflected and represented the theme of the respective Top Ten category in which they were competing. Popular voting helped contribute to the judging decisions, but was just one of a variety of factors considered, including creativity, viability, novelty, quality of description submitted by the entrepreneur, and more.
The Top Ten Best Financial Performers were chosen based on objective financial data, including their 2005 and 2006 gross revenues and net incomes. The actual financial performance was published for the winner and runner-up only, while those details were not disclosed for any of the remaining Top Ten Best Financial Performers in order to preserve their privacy, something uniquely important to home-based entrepreneurs.
