After joining the legions of black women who recently began turning away from chemical processes to manage their hair, I began seeking adornments to show off my new crown of glory. What I found, however, was that most headbands I bought were made with straight hair in mind. They were either small and got swallowed in my voluminous afro, or worse, got tangled in my coily strands. It was then that I decided to start creating couture inspired adornments that worked with and not against my kinks.
After experimenting with a variety of designs and supplies, I created designs that used quality hair friendly materials, vivid colors, and oversized pieces that stood out against our hair. My store launched in 2009 and ever since we've been thriving with the overwhelming support of the natural hair community, bloggers, and reporters.
One of the best parts of the business for me is the heartwarming responses I get from my customers. Due to certain societal pressures, many women feel uneasy about wearing their hair in its natural state. After purchasing my products so many naturalistas have written to me to say wearing my designs helped them in appreciating their curls. According to one customer, "when you're wearing a something handmade especially for you, how could you not feel special?"
