What is to stop a web designer, that one might  hire,  from producing the same type of site for others???

Reputation in your town, for one.  You could always specifcy in the work order contract that the material and design is yours and not the designer.  It'd be good to hear some designers chirp in.

It would not make sense to duplicate a web site for two different clients, because a good web site designer will make the site unique for each client - even if the clients are both in the same type of business.

You may find web sites that are similar because their lay out is the same - that is the header, menu, and content areas are in the same posotions.

By "producing the same type of site for others" you mean taking your unique idea for a web site and creating it for others... that is simply ripping off your business idea. I can not imagine a designer would be in business long if he/she does that.

I suppose nothing but you wouldn't want to make them to be exactly the same then someone might get mad and then you lose their business as a golden rule (when it comes to web design) always try and make them as different as possible even if they are same template use a different color scheme or something..just to make it some what "original".

The contract you sign with them stipulating that what they do for you is owned by you not them. Also choosing someone that has been recommended.

You can check out my buddies at Web Page Developer World. I know and trust them. Ask for either Angela, Andy or Nikki.

But make sure you have an agreement with anyone you choose so everyone knows what the rules are.

I think every website designer will have their own style and similarities are bound to arise. Nothing is really to stop them from doing what you've said, other than the fact it would greatly diminish their credibility as a professional. I know in our Website Design

company, we have different tricks and tools we like to replicate, becasue they work, but to create two identical websites for clients would just be bad business, and morally wrong. We also sign a legal contract with each client to assure the client is getting what they want.

To be honest there is nothing stopping them from doing that ...except if they do it enough eventually they might not be in business.

I guess you could get a contract signed or do something legally.

In my point You could for eternity specifcy in the labor order contract that the fabric and design is yours and not the designer.  It'd be high-quality to hear some designers cheep in.

One word --- Copyright !!

If that is what is keeping from going forward with a venture ... then you don't have the guts to start a business, IMHO.

Seriously, the relationship that you build with your design team is exactly that --- a relationship.

What stops you from cheating on your spouse? Trust --- brought about by a relationship.

Dah !!
