Stella’s Ironic Twists… Labor Day Holiday?
For Americans, as we approach another national holiday that meant something at one time, but is now just an excuse to eat large quantities of trans fat-laden foods and drink impenetrable sums of beer, I pose the question: When will this country’s fastest growing occupation be honored with its own holiday?
In other words, when will there be Home Business Entrepreneur Day? When will people raise their beer cans and over-sized hamburgers to us?
Since we work 365 days a year, we don’t even need a three-day weekend. Just give us a one day weekend!
As I ask this question, I’m also imagining the scene… The first meeting of the Home Business Entrepreneur National Holiday Enactment committee… It goes something like this:
Me: Where’s our vice-president?
Committee Member 1: Oh. No can do. She had to write new web copy for her site, then she had to test some new products. Family stuff, too. Busy.
Me: Right. OK. err… So, let’s all check our calendars… Let’s try to nail down a day for Home Business National Holiday. How’s everybody’s November?
Committee Member 2: C’mon, Stella! The holiday season’s coming up. We have orders to prepare. Have you been sniffing those markers again?
Me (pulling down the marker from my nose): No. Of course not. I’ve been off markers for months… So. I guess that rules out December.
Committee Member 3: Good guess, Stella. I’d like to move that we order a recount on your committee presidency, Stella.
Committee Member 2: I’ll second that. And just toss out January. That’s seasonal returns month and my budgeting and planning period.
Committee Member 1: My February’s killer. Valentine’s Day is huge for me.
Committee Member 2: March and April are shot, too. Taxes.
Me: Okay. How about May?
Committee Member 3: Right. I got kids coming home fron school in a month. I gotta get stuff out the door while the getting is good! Makes me crazy just thinking about it. Pass over that marker, Stell.
Me: So… that mean’s June, July and August are.
Committee members (in unison): No good.
Committee Member 1: Back to school prep.
Committee Member 2: No, sorry. I sell at Arts and Crafts fairs all through October.
Me: So. We can have Home Business Entreprenuer’s Day any day, as long as it’s not in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, or December…
Committee members (in unison): Right!
