You`ll first need to establish discount rates w/ freight companies.....they require volume before deeper discounts are awarded, so your margins will be low at first,....at least until you do more business and get better rates. Licenses you`ll need are only typical business license and standard reseller certificate. Since you arent actually selling any items or doing freight delivery yourself, you are in the middleman business, and your corporation will be treated like one both licensing-wise and tax-wise.

A freight forwarder, I feel, is easier than a domestic broker. The market is not as flooded. When I was brokering, I happened upon a customer that was offering hundreds of LARGE $ shipments annually. They were wanting me to quote rates to ship yachts overseas. I had to go through a freight forwarder as I would a trucking company on a domestic load. If you need any help, let me know.

I would suggest that you work for a shipping firm and get to know the details before you start your business. There's lesser risk that way.

The shipping business is a very tough business. Before starting your own business you must seek advise from all good places you can. From a person who has worked in a shipping company, a shipping company itself and wherever else you can.

Now, I am not a specialist in forwarding and logistics, but I seem to remember from my time with the chamber of commerce, that this is a business sector where you still need a Chinese partner. Unless the rules have changed recently. I think it is similar as with the courier companies. But again, that was a while ago, and maybe someone with fresher knowledge can fill the gaps.
