I've told many friends, family members, and neighbors a very simple way to "de-hoaxify" something that lands in your e-mail inbox...
Simply take a sentence from the e-mail, put it in quotes, and run it through Google.
Chances are, if the hoax has been around a while, you'll find several search results giving you the real scoop on the urban legends.

McAfee comes with something called SiteAdvisor that installs as a add on to your browser. SiteAdvisor Gives you a Green - Yellow - Red style recommendation for each site. If you do a Google (or other search engine) look up SiteAdvisor appends a recomendation to each link returned.
