One of the most powerful steps the Sloan brothers include in their 10-step program, is to have a Life Plan! Prior to Startup Nation, very few (as to be negligible) business people EVER gave importance to this idea.

Interestingly enough, a powerful emerging principle in the field of evolution theory concerns just this problem: meaning.

For most of modern history, all of us tend to look at something in life and ask, "what does it do?" But over the past 50 years, a confusing new trend has been to ask, "what does it mean?"

You'd think that something like this would be so obvious that "any idiot" would know it, understand it, and integrate it into everything. Instead, we have an entire culture where people get lost in the "doing," not the "meaning."

The "Life Plan" is a fundamental reference to FIRST determining the meaning to you of having a business! Then go out an see about the doing part. Without the meaning, life becomes a never-ending upward spiral into total chaos.

Are you Living to Work or Working to Live?  Sometimes, these seem to get blurred.  You can make a lot of money, but your life shouldn't be about just about the paycheck.  You can have both.

When a business intially gets going, it cuts into personal time significantly.  The important thing is to decide what you can let ride and what needs attention.  It is easy to spend every moment on a business.  You can neglect very important priorities...your family, your friends, your daughter's dance recital, the school play, etc.  BLOCK OUT TIME for the important events.  I've heard a saying that goes something like this "Nobody ever said on their deathbed that they wished they had spent more time at work".  Sometimes, you may not make 100% of events and keep up with everybody, but it is easy to miss it all.  .
Business can be worked on 24 hours a day and not grow any faster than if you worked on it for a good 10 hours.  I work in the dental field and I'm transitioning out of it and into my own business.  The dental field is predominantly a 4 day work week.  It used to be five days, but so many studies were done in this field that most people benefitted from working really hard for 4 days and having 3 days off to play.  (I know people can't believe that I'm leaving this type of work week, but my wrists, back and neck can't handle another 20 years.)  To me, quality of life is family first, but taking care of family also includes providing food, shelter, and activities.  If I am making $100K per year, but I neglect those I love, then that's not quality of life.  Plan your priorities and make time for them.

Taking LiveWise's point even farther: Suppose you become fabulously rich, with all the money you could possibly have---more than you can spend? Then what? What would you do with that money? What would you do with your life?

One of the main problems we're facing at our time in history is not knowing what "quality of life" even means. We don't know how to define quality, nor do we understand the metaphorical idea of life.

Here's a fun little example I picked up out of a James Patterson book: In it, Alex Cross, his lead character, is working far too much and missing most of his kids' main events. His mother (Nana-mamma) helps manage the home, since Cross' wife was killed.

She brings him two big jars, one night, like gallon cider jugs. One of them is filled with marbles, the other is empty. She says something like, "Every Saturday, take one marble out of this jar and put it into that jar. You can't take it out again; it's in there for good.

"There are enough marbles in there to account for every Saturday of your remaining life. Right now they look like a lot, but each time you move a marble, you've 'spent' 1 Saturday. Think about what you spent it on---was it worth it, knowing you'll never have it back?"

Something else that might help you find more time to yourself, not knowing anything about you, is to get as organized as you can.
Again, I don't know you and you may be very organized. This is advice coming from an ex slob.
Make an honest assessment of what your time is worth to the minute. For example, I am an engraver and going by industry standards in my field, I know that my time is (on average) worth about $120 an hour. That breaks down to $2.00 a minute. Once you get an average of how much your time is worth (doesn't need to be exact), take an assessment (write it down throughout the day in a notebook and add it up if you need to) of how much time you spend in a day looking for things, talking on the phone, all the little time consumers that we generally do not pay much attention to. Take however many minutes that comes to and multiply that by what your time is worth per minute. You see how much time you are wasting and how much money that turns into. An example, I found out that I was roughly spending a little over 32 minutes a day (weekly average) looking for things that I misplaced. simple math, $2x32=64.00 a week (which equals $320 a  month per five day work week, which meant I was basically losing roughly 32 hours a year 'or' $3,840). This was just in the time I spent looking for misplaced items. Organization helps bigtime in finding time. Phone calls; take messages and set up a time to do your phone calls, a time to check and return emails, etc. Organization = efficiency = productivity = more time.
