Source of this discusssion: /steps/76/3864/1/1/website-content-code.htm Page description: To make your site as magnetic as possible, it must be easy to find, easy to use, and clearly value rich. As a first step in marketing your website, you must "deliver on the promise" at your site, and that's what you'll learn.

I'm am new at this and am trying to get a handle on the "lingo" ie: Widgets ??
I don't have a clue what that is.

Where could I find a dictionary of Internet related terms that I could go to when I see something that is new to me. I think this would speed up my learning curve.

Thanks.

Try wikipedia.

A widget is like a ready-made program. They give you a little snippet of code (often JavaScript), you paste it in, and a little program runs on your site.

I recommend checking out info on search engine optimization and content management systems over just paginating a website properly.

Widgets to me in easy terms are different shaped banners.

They are for advertising, look out for those that you can brand
yourself with, that can be even better then.

Going back to the concern of widgets adding to the clutter of a page ....

I think a widget should have a defined purpose before it becomes a part of a site, and should not be used just because it looks cool.

Also, the widget should look like it's a part of the site.

Great post.

Widgets can add a lot of great value and a viral component to drive visitors to your site. But! They must be valuable! Nobody cares about pure advertising. Make it functional and make it userful.

Not long ago, widgets were something beyond the reach of the average web user. But now, with tools like SproutBuilder.com, (I love this site!) make creating very cool widgets a snap. Using video in your widgets is very powerful too. See an example, Small Business Video Question on my site).

I am happy to help anybody that is interested.
