Jeff:

You're SO right on the money with the advice:
"Those who can buy from you and those who can refer you to people..."

In the computer consulting industry, like many similar professional services industries (accounting, legal, management consulting, etc.), these influencers and other trusted business advisors who can send referrals your way are worth their weight in gold.

Quicker sales cycles. Fewer sales objections. Less price resistance. A true extension of your sales force.

All too often, small businesses spend a ton of money and time trying to get all of their customers to be referral sources. And that's all well and good...

But in certain industries, you'll get much more bang for the buck if you FOCUS on finding natural referral sources who already have a foot in the door with the exact same prospects you're trying to reach.

Thanks for the great article!

Thanks for the tips about how to classify prospects.

I'm starting to use a software for contact management that has some features you have in your manual system. It's free and you can download it from www.RoloFlex.biz

I will apply your suggestions, thanks again.

Hi Peter,

It looks like you have an interesting software application for small businesses.

However just to clarify... the Computer Consulting Kit Home Study Course is not a "manual system" or software application.

The Computer Consulting Kit Home Study Course is a proven training course for owners of computer consulting businesses, value added resellers, network integrators, and IT solution providers.

Best wishes for growing your small business with better prospecting for sales leads,

Joshua Feinberg

Hi Joshua

Sorry, there was a misunderstanding. I was referring to the 3x5 card, which is a proven system, but personal contact software application can have more features and benefits, and can be more helpful when the number of leads or contacts grow. I think you will agree to this.

Your clarification is valid, since your product is a study course, and must be very helpful for entrepreneurs.

Best wishes,

Peter Karminsky

Let me add to this article for finding some leads using Internet.  Internet contains massive amounts of information for every type of business. And there are online B2B purchasing services available that can get you leads from "ready to purchase" buyers. Most of these services provides "Pre-Qualified" leads; some sample websites include C2B Connect! (www.c2bconnect.com), Biz2Biz, quotationresource.com etc. where suppliers can join the FREE network to receive leads from buyers. These sites provides a unique service for both buyer's and suppliers.  Buyer's get free purchasing resource/guide to help them know more about the product; and have Buyer's submit a RFQ (request for quote) process; which is in-turn a lead to suppliers in their network.  Most services like this charge some nominal fee per Lead, and some do charge an annual maintenance fee (you should avoid them).

Another great free resource for finding leads online is http://www.salesconx.com.  Here you are able to establish your own buyer and seller price for the leans you want.  I would say Salesconx is a cross between LinkedIn’s professional networking and eBay’s online marketplace model in a "Web 2.0" way.

As far as using a contact management system - most of the time you can configure your contact screen to include different fields for entering any type of information that is specific to your needs. This is how I track and define the sales status of my customers by defining them as "Hot, Warm, Cold". Therefore, when I do a keyword search, I will look for the word "Hot" and it will bring up the contacts that are defined as "Hot".

Thus I have eliminated my 3 x 5 cards.
