I find it very interesting that most people who start a home-based business have a unique relationship with the door to that office!  In the beginning, they will do anything - clean the shed, iron the curtains, put 20 years of pictures in albums - to avoid opening that door!   Then slowly, but surely, as they get their feet wet and the momentum bills and the money starts to come in, they find it difficult to leave the office and shut the door behind them.   After 20 years as a home-based business consultant, I can't tell you how many times I've had to work with clients who need a bit of hand holding to get started and then some firmer measure in order to forgo business at the end of the day and create a balance for themselves.  My philosophy is very basic - take your business seriously, but have fun with it too!   If you are chained to the desk, whether its at home or at another location, the point is the same - you are not having any fun!   Loving relationships should not be sacrificed in pursuit for that "one" more client...nobody says "Gee, I should have spent more time at the office!" when they are old and grey....kids go from 2 to 20 in about 15 minutes when you are not looking...and you turn into a stressed out, short tempered, nasty person whom nobody wants to be around when you overwork and you under"play".   Sometimes I am driven to give "permission" to my clients to take a Tuesday afternoon off.  I encourage them to go to the movies, to go to the park, to go to the mall AND to turn off the cell phone.   You have an important meeting with yourself!   And that is also why the answering machine was invented.    So, folks, be good to yourself.  You will be amazed how that will trickle out to your family and friends and customers.   Check out more Home-Based Business Tips on the DVD "How To Start and Operate A Home-Based Business" at www.thehome-office.com

A Virtual Office can also really help. you stay focused. If you set up all your meetings or conf calls for two specific days a week, and have a professional business office location to meet, it "forces" you to prepare in advance at home and be focused while at the "office" . VO's also have professional phone answering and a prestigous business address- which not only gives the right image but protects the privacy and security of giving out your home address or always answering your own calls.. Regus offers Virtual Office solutions at 950 locations worldwide but please feel free to contact me directly at 248 680 6601 and I would be happy to explain more.

I totally agree with you.  When I first started a home based business, I found myself either totally obsessed with my business, working at it 24-7 or there will be days when cleaning the fridge has to be done before I think about working on my business.  It is hard to balance working out of your home.  For me, making lists really helps to keep me on task.  As soon as I am done with my business list, I can move onto my house list.  It was a great way to divide up all the work that has to be done.

I love my business and I can at times become consumed with it. However, I do have those moments where I take the time to step away and take care of the other important tasks (like stock up on groceries, read and reply on posts here on SN and shower ;-) On the other hand, I have so many ideas of improving the business that I rush back to get things going. Most of all, I enjoy working on my business and watching it grow. I keep my family involved so they are all a part of the team. We work hard and plan big family vacations to play harder.......
Take each day, mold it and make it yours.......

It is consuming, that's for sure. If your sanity is of any value, you learn quickly to set boundaries for yourself and manage your time effectively. There is always something more to do. The question is did you meet your most imporant objectives for the day?

I get a kick out of people who say if they could run their own home business, they'd only work 10 hours a week.

Make that 60 hours a week, I think.

Running a home-based business is very time consuming. I find myself drifting off every now and then to get other things done. But when it comes time to close the door at 5 and walk away. No matter what I have going on at 5pm its family time and anything on my desk can wait till morning. Great post by the way. Visit our website at
