I just experienced this "Invisi-Business" phenomenon described by Microsoft.

Suzanne & I wanted Chinese carry-out the other night and I found the phone number for the local Chinese restaurant on the internet in a business directory listing but the restaurant didn't have a website themselves so we couldn't look at a menu & phone the order in in advance.

We used to keep menus from local restaurants on hand at home but have thrown them all away since we can easily look at them on the web.

No website, no menu, no customer.  We ordered pizza.

Funny.  Yes, as a website developer I completely agree.  If you are not on the web you are invisible in a lot of ways. <><><><><><><>< ><><><><><><>

Joel,
Yes I find myself taking the easy way out too. The Internet is so convenient. It's so convenient that it's become too difficult to pick up the phone, dial 411, tell the city location, and ask for a Chinese delivery or takeout phone numbers.

I had a rubber stamp made, completely through the Internet. I never took the time to even price check through phone calls using the phone book. Uh oh. Is the phone book falling to the wayside?

Do you have a link to this invisi-business phenomenon that you are describing as I'm interested in reading up on it?

As a designer myself, I was kinda thinking about this the other day, re: lost business by not having a simple brochure website.

Let's say, it cost $750 for a simple brochureware site. I wonder if there are any studies/research done that would show how much a customer would lose over the course of a year?

Can we make the case that for everytime a business owner, say a business consultant, who doesn't have a site, will lose business because someone wanted to learn more about their consulting services and found them through a business directory, social networking site, online forum like this, etc...?

The Internet is where I get all of my information it seems.  I don't ever use a physical yellow page anymore and if I go shopping for a large purchase, the Internet is where I go to cross check prices.  It does seem that so many businesses need to be on the Internet, even if at first glance it doesn't appear they should exist in that world. Text is so black and white...it doesn't have as much color as the tone in somebodies voice.

HDean,

There is a link at the top of this forum page that goes to the Radio Show page on this topic. And, as you see, I just included the link here as well. Maybe we need to make these links more obvious?

Yeah, most likely. It might help to bold or make a bit darker for it stand out. And while you're at it, I personally find the stickies that appear on every board to be tedious. From a usability standpoint, I think it's easier to put those stickies in one area rather than on all boards because it keeps forcing members to scroll down to find the topics of interests. I have a 17 inch monitor and the stickies occupy the entire upper fold of my screen. In order for me to find topics, i have to scroll down an entire fold to find them. It's a bit discouraging so I've limited which forums I want to visit because I don't to keep scrolling and mousing down.

Food for thought....
