One of the items of which I didn't see mentioned was streamling data management systems.  There are many software programs to select from but the system I use is ACT software.  It allows me to:  schedule appointments and client follow ups; to keep notes on promises and client expectations; create task lists; relates emails to specific clients; generates various reports; provides an overall history for improved customer service; and best of all it allows me to download my client contact information into my PDA.

In a prior posting there was mention of wanting GPS for driving directions. Instead of purchasing multiple devices, it may be beneficial to purchase one unit which has PDA, cell phone and internet capability. The reason being is if you have internet capability on the unit then you may be able to download directions from Mapquest or view the GPS maps which are found on http://earth.google.com/     As a final note, in case no one tells you, PDA's can be damaged by static electricity.  (In other words, they don't tolerate climate changes especially cold winter nights so it is best not to leave them in a vehicle .)

Reading Jeff's post about his office enviornment, hours, dress, etc. made me think about another trick that makes you and your business stick and stand out in the mind of clients and potential clients.

Change your voice mail message everyday. Just as people have come to expect Jeff's quirky attire, people will look forward to hearing your unique, quirky and ever-changing voice mail messages. It may be a pain to get started, but after a few days or weeks, it will just become a part of your everyday routine and your customers will apprceciate it.

Offer specifics. The time (or day) you will return to your office. When you'll return calls. Let's say you're in an all-day training session. You could say, "Hello. I'm in an all-day class today learning about ways I can serve you better. Leave a detailed message and I'll call you tomorrow morning." Be creative. Communicate like you would if you were face-to-face.

Encourage the callers to leave detailed messages. This will help you prepare better for the return call and have your "ducks in a row."

And always throw in a little humor. Everyone likes to laugh. It's just good for business ... and the world!

And always, always review your messages.

INVENTORY has been a thorn in my side from the beginning.  Anyone have a good software or system for tracking that is cost effective?

Changing the voice mail every day is a GREAT idea...never would have thought of that one! I'm going to start doing this right away...now I just have to think of something clever!

Wonderful article!!  I do agree.  It made me go back to the post I had about 'dressing for success'.  I had asked and received much advice about a 'uniform' to wear when delivering products to my customers.  I was told that polo shirts and a good work pant was pretty much expected and mandatory.  Well, JC Penney had a sale on polos so I picked up a dozen, in a variety of colors.

Now, I need to have them embroidered with the company logo.  I was told the logo needed to be digitized in order to be embroidered.  Not a problem.  Does anyone out here know where I can get this done??  I was told most companies send the artwork out, so I thought that if I could have it digitized personally, I won't be stuck to one company to do the work.  Especially if I don't like their work to begin with.

As for office hours . . . boy I agree with the idea that setting a time is easy, but following thru with it is very difficult.  I have actually taken the initiative to move my office out to my RV.  Not a bad move, it allows me to take my work more seriously.  When I need to get some work done and the house is 'busy', I move out to the RV and concentrate much better.  Problem is, as already mentioned, actually deserting the family to get some work done.  But, I think I'm more and more on my way to much better organization, thanks to the folks here at SUN!!

Have a great weekend and let me know where I can find a place or person to digitize my logo for me.

Thanks again
CPS!!

I think it is funny when people advertise a home based business saying that you can work in your pajamas.

There is so much good advise on this thread,  you all will find mine silly.  Just seeing my goofy "hang in there poster" makes me feal like I am at work.

So much great advice!  I'm in the process of starting my business...Waiting on my cards, did my bus. plan, and am in the website process now.  I'd love some advice on some logo shirts for women other than polos.  Maybe something a bit more feminine/sexy (not trashy of course) and  nothing soccer-momish...no offence but I just never cared for the land end or l.l. bean look but cant seem to find much out there for women, so anyone know of a comp. that might offer something different?  Thanks!!
