Ok, lots of good ideas here, I have a couple of more, spent a big huge chunk of my life marketing. Here goes. Colored envelopes get noticed. Colored postcards get noticed, for one of my clients, (lawn service) we sent yellow cards with black ink. $1400 investment turned into a business we sold last year for $15K. My accounting firm uses letter openers as premiums, they make great lumpy mail and do not cost too much. For your company, print one of your page designs, and print your letter on the back of it. Or use several. Or screen shots as postcards. You get the idea.Dale

Another thing to do whether it is regular mail or a specialty packing is to hand address the mailing versus using labels or typing the address. Marketing experts advise that you have a better chance of the mail being read if hand addressed.
Hope this helps!

I've just started a new marketing program that's REALLY turning heads.
I'm using a lenticular 4-part flip that essentially demonstrates my product ( www.accessmount.com - the flash photos throughout the site).
They make a great mail piece. We're also putting a lenticular photo on the spine of the binders we give to architects. Every time they walk by their bookcase, our binder is the only one that flashes a sales pitch...
There's a decent company out there that will do a two-part flip lenticular for not a whole lot of money (they'll do either a post card or a business card). They did ours: http://www.extremevisionproducts.com/
Thank you,
Nelson

FANTASTIC IDEA! I do a tremendous amount of mailings, and they do get lost in the shuffle. Not only can I send my marketing material, but I can also include a small sample in the tube as well.
I am getting ready for my January mailings, and this will definitely kick it up a nice notch!
Thanks so much,
Kate

I was just in the same boat as you jdawg. I just got done putting
together a bid kit for my design firm. We put in 2 pages of high
quality screen shots and testimonials showing what the site was to what
we did with it and what tools we used, etc. Then I had some custom
folders made and send it out to anyone that requests one at
81designs.com. Plus it serves as a cold call kit, if i wanted to go
pitch a certain business.

Hi there,
I am new to StartUpNation and wanted to say another way to stand out is with SendOutCards.com It is an internet based greeting card company that prints your cards and mails them for you on demand. It also reminds you of your contacts birthday's and other special occasions so you never forget! With the system you can upload photos to the front or inside of any greeting card. So next time at a trade show or other event, snap some pics and put them on the front of a card and send it without leaving the comfort of your computer. Go to www.sendoutcards.com/wildestdreamcards to send a free card and for more information!
Happy Holidays!

Here is an idea we found worked and did not cost much to do. We did two post card mailings using the same message. The first card we used a four color card with our normal colors and layout from our company. This was a card that in the past received a very good response in our opinion. The second card we used was a bright red card with black ink. We mailed the cards to equal numbers of potential customers scattered evenly over the US and guess what happen. The red card showed nearly a 100% increase in response! Many potential customers called us to just make sure they were not missing something important because of the red card. This just proves if you can make it stand out, it will do better as with the tube idea. My only concern about using tubes is the cost and making sure what you put in the tube generates a response that is worth the expense. I receive so many mailings that have no call to action that I wonder why they wasted their time and money. Bert at Harvey Software, Inc.

There are some very good ideas being thrown around! I run a small marketing consulting company in the Pacific Northwest, and we have employed many of the techniques mentioned, including the tubes. Listed are a couple things that you need to think about before you get ahead of yourself.
1. Make sure you are using an updated list that has been referenced through the National Change of Address Registry. The tube packages aren't too expensive, but for every one that is returned, you are looking at around $2 dollars worth of postage and materials.
2. Be aware of the weight the package. If you put truffles, candy, crayons, etc, that will add more to the weight, increasing the postage amount (even though postage is tax deductible, it is better to spend less!).
3. Tube mailings can be quite time intensive to apply postage too! I did a 500 tube mailing, and each parcel needed $.93, and that specific combo needed 4 different stamps per tube!
4. Mailing to previous and current customers has the highest response rate, regardless of packaging. This is especially true for service related industries.
5. If using a mailing house for your mailing, make sure to check postal documentation and make sure the company isn't marking up the postage they are paying for you. It is illegal for mailers to do this, and postage is non-taxable as well!
