Joel had asked on this podcast if prospects had to be educated about what podcasting.  I have found that just about everyone has heard of a podcast but when asked to describe it we are often hard pressed to provide a concise definition.  Further those that can define it aren't sure why they would want to podcast in the first place.

So my question is this, as fellow small business owners what are the hurdles keeping you from podcasting today? Money? Technology? Not sure where to start?, etc.

Also purely from a business standpoint where do you see podcasts being the most useful in the future?

Couldn't we ask the same question of authors everywhere, "What's keeping you from releasing an audio version of your book?" Craig Landes

CraigL said it!

I have a job that enables me to listen to the radio or cd's all day. Unfortunately I cannot read all day long. It is a great help to a consumer like myself when a book is offered in an audio version!

With the question about why people are not Podcasting these days:

I have searched the internet for hours looking for Podcasts, thats how I found this site. But many of them that I did find the individuals who were doing them were either out of business or said that they were eliminating their podcast for a "while" so they could get back on their feet.

I know nothing about how a Podcast is made nor can I figure out those forsaken feeds. But I would like to see some stats or figures on how much and how you could make a proffesional Podcast. Note I said proffesional, this is due to the fact that I started to listen to some that I downloaded and they sounded like a man in a basement recording on a tape reel.

I think that is an excellent point.  The appeal comes down to listening when you want where you want and that usually means when you have nothing else you can do but listen and burn time.

The reason we started our company was exactly what you are saying.  Folks don't have time to get it figured out.  Many companies I have spoken with in the last week said, "We really want to podcast but no one here knows where to start."  I think the diy mentality clouds it a little also.  You can do the "man in the basement" approach but if you have a professional company you probably want a professional image.  Then you go to a recording studio to find out what the rates are and either get scared off or if you can put the money into it you do the recordings but aren't sure how to get them on your website and create an RSS feed to promote it.  We built our studios based on podcasting so the rates are more affordable but our real benefit is helping you get the rest of the process completed to have a total package.

If you think writing is hard to do, and understand how many people believe they're a skilled writer, podcasts are worse! EVERYbody thinks they know how to talk! LOL!

But podcasts involved technology, audio and sound, "mixing," and the conversion from recording format to MP3. It involves large files, not as large as video, but still very large. Then it involves clear articulation, continuous speech, and having something to say.

I think the next big leap in technology is going to be when text-to-speech software becomes really indistinguishable from spoken-by-human language.

thanks

Quite possibly.  What type of business is it?

I think that any business where you can educate your customers would work well in a podcast.  Newsletters are great but when people hear you speak it takes that relationship to a completely different level. Personally I would avoid just reading the newsletter. Maybe taking an article or theme from the newsletter and expanding on that in the podcast would be much more productive and increase the value to your clients.

Think about how you feel about Jeff and Rich.  There is a strong connection because they are educating you but also building a relationship every week.  Very powerful stuff.
