I think what's writtin on a tombstone people do not always get to see. But what they remember about you after you die stays in there heart and mind. If it was on a good note they try and include your way into there way of doing things, Like Martin Luther King,

 "So the day of ones death is better than the day of their birth"

The issue isn't what's really written on a tombstone. It's more like a 10-word "elevator pitch" to people, selling them on the idea of what your life "was" like. It's developed in the present, with the future in mind, to get a reality check on what you're currently doing with your life.

To expand it into some vague, external idea that what other people think after I'm dead won't matter is to let slide the exercise itself. What would YOU say if you read the tombstone exercise about anyone? Substitue the "anyone" with your Self, and it helps describe the core motivations of your own life.
