That's exactly what I'm talking about! Marketing doesn't need to be "sexy" (ie. TV, Radio) it needs to be effective! You also shoudn't be paying to advertise to people who are outside of your local market area (Radio,TV, Major newspapers). Be sure your advertising dollars are focused on the nearby customers who are most likely to buy from you.

While about 85% of my business is from outside of my home state - and even from foreign countries - most of my local business comes from participation in a small local business association, press releases to the local small neighborhood weekly/monthly newspapers (we have two in our small area of the city), marketing via programs for local school, church or neighborhood events.

Hmmm, this local idea is a good one. I think I'll pop in on highrise office managers in buildings that have balconies. The residents are perfect candidates for my gardening tool. Learning that they can eliminate the mess when planting their containers by using WEDGIE would probably be welcome info. I can drop off a flyer at a lot of buildings before next spring's planting season.
Thanks for the inspiration. Cookie -- Inventor of WEDGIE, the container gardener's favorite planting tool -- The Best Gardening Tool www.wedgie.biz

Marketing at a local level can be a great way for a new business to begin getting the word out. There are a lot of people who hold a passion for where they live and hence, the products that come out of that place. A community can become proud of the successes that emerge from their town, city or neighborhood. If you keep that in mind as you market closer to home, you're sure to find some of these "local evangelists".
So what kinds of things do you do to market within your local community?

My company is getting ready to start a campaign called "Wear a Pet to Save a Pet", where we encourage local pet owners in the DC area to wear one of our photo crystals with their pet's picture to show their support of animals in need, and in return, we donate a portion of the photo crystal sales to a local animal shelter. By marketing locally, we can help causes that are important to the local community.

Marketing at a local level means something different to every business. To many, local market means attracting customers from a one mile radius around their business. To others, local market means attracting customers from a larger radius. In these tough times, casting a broader net is the only way to stay in business. That being said, now is the best time to use ads on your local broadcast TV station to attract NEW CUSTOMERS. (Don't start with cable tv ads, use them later!) You'll be absolutely shocked to find out how reasonable the ads are and the cost to produce your TV ad! Check into it, you'll be very glad you did.
Much success to you.
