Very true. We need a dedicated space for our home office, not in the corner
of the TV room! I treat mine like I am in a different location, once I walk
through the door I'm at work!Pay The Price

I took over our basement as my business grew. Thankfully, it's a walk-out basement with windows (more like a lower level than a basement). It's actually rather nice down here! We finished off half of it into a space for my business. It's so nice to have a separate space from the rest of the house. If the kids do come down here, the older one colors or plays V-Smile, and the younger one plays in his big playpen. We have a TV and VCR down here too. If I need to work longer, I bring my laptop up to the main house and watch the kids up there. It's a decent arrangement. I have a lot of shipping boxes and giant bags full of shipping peanuts. I really needed a larger space for that stuff especially.Chris

My business grew from a desk (on wheels!) in the kitchen to us building a new house with a separate entry-way for my office. Now I don't have clients traipsing through my house - an especially nice feature during tax season! No way am I cleaning then. We're lucky if I cook during those months. I started when my boys were small (2 & 6). They are now 20 & 24. So keeping kids out of the office isn't the problem it used to be. But, with the boys growing up with a work-at-home mom, they knew what they were allowed to do and when it was okay to come in to visit. My 24 year old has made me a grandma, so we're back to the beginning again. She's 2 and if I'm working while she's here, she likes nothing better than to rummage through Grandma's desk! Now she's having to learn the same boundaries my boy's did.

I also had a rule from day one of working at home. A regular start time, makeup everyday, no pajamas. Have to admit to bending those once in a while, but by and large I stick to it.

I don't wear makeup, but I agree with the whole no pajamies thing. My girlfriend works in our home office with me, and shes always in jamies. I get dressed right when I get up and it helps make me feel a little more like I'm going to a job, iguess it makes me take myself more seriously. She has 2 little boys. They're pretty good about stuff when we're in the office. I agree that it's important to set boundaries for kids if your going to be working at home while they're home.I know you've heard of this before... But before starting one up, think it through. It’s great to be your own Boss , but you need to earn a decent income and there’s a lot more to operating your own home-based business .

To begin with, you need to have lots of initiative, self-confidence and marketing skills, as well as perseverance. Good organizational skills and business smarts are other must-haves. You need to set up a business plan, arrange financing, price your products or services competitively, and make sure you don’t get so caught up in a project that you let marketing, bookkeeping and other essential tasks slip. ...

Do most of you want to keep your business at home? have you chosen the "home" as office for the long run or do you envision growing out of the home and into a brick and mortar kind of biz?

my brother and i worked out of his windowless basement for 8 years. great during a michigan winter. terrible during a michigan summer. but always great on conserving cash and staying in blue jeans ...

I definitely plan to move it out of the house - sort of. I actually envision buying a home with a big barn attached in a business-zone, or a place where I can at get a variance. I would convert the barn into a manufacturing area and retail store area. (We have some places here that have done that.) I want to keep the business nearby because I have young children and can't see cooping them up in the back of a store in a strip mall for hours at a time. Plus I would rather pay rent toward my own property, than pay it to some landlord. I am actually working with a Realtor right now to get an idea of what our home is worth and what is on the market. I'm excited about it! If this idea doesn't pan out, I will be looking for some sort of warehouse space.
