Walgreens [drug store] attempted to register their trademark for "Wal-vert" which is a generic form of Claritin. Wyeth [drug manufacturer] sells the same drug under the mark "Alavert." Do you think consumers would be confused into thinking that both Wal-vert and Alavert come from the same source - or that the two sources of the drug are somehow connected or affiliated?

I don't think so. Although, even though you said it was Walgreens, I immediately thought Wal-Mart.

Me too, particularly with the "Wal-" and the dash. But I wasn't at all
thinking they came from the same source. Instead, being a cynic, I just
figured someone was trying to steal the Alavert name, piggy-backing on
an existing marketing and branding campaign.

Sounds like I am in good company:) The first thing I thought of was Wal-Mart also.

I've seen them on the shelves together at Walgreens and had to do a double-take at first. Obviously Walgreens has attempted to create that confusion with the same size packaging and the package colors- and side-by-side shelf placement.
I go out of my way to not be a Walmart (no hyphen in the name any longer) customer so that really didn't cross my mind at all.

Off subject, but I also assumed Walmart right off the bat, despite there not being a Walmart store near me. Goes to show the power of branding - especially when a company has the mega resources of Walmart.
And copying the look of brand name packaging is nothing new - I imagine countless people buy a generic brand inadvertantly, thinking they grabbed the name brand. Is this deceptive practice or just smart marketing?
