There's two options, push and pull. Push is when you get unsolicited text messages. This infuriates me. It should be illegal imo. Insult to injury, I'm charged to receive their ad. I've had text messaging removed from my cell phone because of it. I see this as no different than getting unsolicited ads via fax. It costs me money to get unsolicited and unwanted ads. This WILL become illegal soon in the US if the measure is passed by both houses.
Pull is another story. If you opt in to receive messages, then there's no problem.

I would certainly hate to receive adverts in my private communications.
I use Broadtexter to communicate with our users. I can target them by State as well so it works for what I need it to do, it's free and it allows me to embed widgets on websites. http://www.mullingsbrothers.blogspot.com

Thanks guys! There are some great considerations here regarding text messaging.
I am currently working on the development of an integrated system for communication with our field security agents. Currently records are kept manually by each agent, and processed by adminstrators in our office. I can see many advantages in using text messaging for communicating with our clients and agents

Given our client base (we sell cell phones on-line), my company felt that our customers would be interested in this type of communication.We ran an informal poll of our customers about a month ago and found that a vast majority felt that receiving ads via text message would be intrusive. However, about 28% of the people we polled said they would be receptive to it. We are currently putting together an opt-in type of system for those interested. I would appreciate any comments from someone who has already tried this. What successes / problems they have encountered etc.. Hope that helps.

All my phone numbers are registered with the Do Not Call registry, and yet I continue to receive this type of SMS, which I too find infuriating.
It should be illegal without a CLEAR opt-in.
For me, it is only a negative message about your brand/company.
