This is exactly my point! If you are not in the process of producing Volume 2, you are lying. If lying doesn't bother your conscience -- and it should, if you intend to stay in business -- look at it this way:
You may get a quick sale from someone who is being duped, but there is no way you will keep him as a customer in the long haul. People do not like being victims of lies (Just check that with those voters who have turned away from Hillary after her "sniper fire" tale). So, to keep in business, you have to keep on compounding the lie. The result is that you get deeper and deeper into trouble.
I am not trying to knock anyone else's bright idea; I am trying to save people from a potential disaster in their lives. My business depends upon my total honesty with my clients. At the end of the day, I can look back on my work and be contented that I did what was right. If you can't then you are already in big trouble.

So who's saying, "Be dishonest"?
I haven't seen anything indicating within this post to say, produce a volume one or chapter one or anything else one but don't follow up with it.
It makes sense to assume that if you have a great response to volume one, then of course, you want to follow up to see the response from volumes thereafter.
However, if your first volume is decidedly a belly flop, no one is saying, oh continue on. It will be worth more in the long run.
Business does have an integrity factor which we all (or most of us) abide by. It doesn't suggest lack of integrity or morals if one doesn't follow up. It just means that they lack the drive, motivation, or experience to back up a follow up. And yes, some unscrupulous people would lack the integrity to do so as well. But I just can't see someone saying, "Oh my! I'm going to produce a Volume One, make a million from it, and deceive the people by not producing a Volume Two."
Call me naive. But in truth, it doesn't matter to me. It's not my area of expertise. My area of expertise lies in retail sales of tangible goods. I'm tired of defending everyone else from folks looking for the pitchfork in the other hand.
Out.

Dan: Produce a "deluxe" model as an alternate choice or upgrade. This IS common practice for lots of stuff. I did it with jewelry - bigger stones, high K gold, etc. For publications, create updated versions with latest information (volumes) as is also common practice among academics/professors. (Publish or die!)
Oh yeah Dan, you are anything BUT naive. My guess is, if you "see" evil - it probably is... unlike the paranoids out there. (Note to paranoids: The world REALLY IS out to get you!)
The difference between Yanik and the "yahoo's" is but one thing... he applies and takes action on what he has read from the masters like E. Schwartz and others. It's hard to argue with what works, and it's even harder to justify not using something that's legitimate and ethical to motivate others.

Patch: I have very carefully re-read every word in that article and all comments to date. Nowhere do I see any hint of using or encouraging dishonesty of any sort (except in YOUR posts) - and that includes lying about intentions. Perhaps you have some mystical power of reading thoughts not written, but secretly harboured by those of us that have posted?
Not everyone in business is a charlatan... in fact, the vast majority of us are just plain hard-working honest folks making a living for our families. The cheat is indeed a rare bird, and then, easily found out and exposed.
Patch, I think of integrity and honesty in everything I say AND do... and I am definitely in it for the long haul. I have been doing successful business with integrity for better than 50 years. I suspect that is a fairly long haul, don't you?

Regardless of what Dan and Nick say, it is dishonest if you label something "Volume One" without the intention of producing a "Volume Two" in the future.
The original posting on this made no mention of any "Volume Two", just a "Volume One". You do have to be naive if you do not see in this a suggestion that this is, indeed, an opportunity to deceive. To me that is dishonest. And I hope that it is to you, too.
The fact that many business people today are dishonest is no justification for us to be like them. The greatest failure in business is not the loss of investment but the loss of reputation.

Patch, you're gonna' have to quantify "many" for me... since that implies a good percentage of folks in business.
I sincerely doubt that more than a very tiny percentage are anything less than genuinely honest in their dealing with their customers. Reason: The customer is why the business exits... why mess with (poop in?) your rice bowl? To do otherwise is more than short-sighted, it's downright foolish.
