Excellent bit of information. I have found that without the "hot product" differentiation can be one of the best ways to be successful among all the competitors on ebay. It also helps to find a niche and no follow what eveyrone else is doing.
Tim Knox wrote a great article about not following the herd and finding a product niche. If interested I have included a link to it below.

Even if you don't choose to have an eBay store, you should try to have
a running auction all the time. Yes, it costs money if it doesn't sell,
but a lot of people will look at your product, decide they're not yet
ready to buy, and want to find it again later. If you have a constant
auction running, they'll know that you're there, you're not going to
vanish, you have some longevity (and credibility), and there isn't the
"pressure" to buy within the next day or three. It gives you a
"presence" on eBay much like a store, but not as expensive.

Definitely check out the Big Crumbs program. I've found it to be a huge benefit to my ebay auctions - it drives traffic and conversions in turn. As an ebay seller, Big Crumbs allows you to post your store free on their site - gaining immediate access to the most eBay "savvy" membership (2 million members I think) online. With the new BigCrumbs 2.0 they've also added a social networking component and this makes it a valuable additional to the arsenal of any serious ebay seller online. There's another running threat at StartUpNation with a BigCrumbs review here. Best of luck to you!

I am about to fire PayPal as my web site Card Processing service. Their security system refused my client's perfectly good Visa and Master cards and they take no responsibility for it. Also their support has degraded to an unacceptable level.
If you have FIRST HAND good experience with another Merchant Card web site processor, I would like to hear from you.
Thank you.
