I have an idea for a product, but not sure how to go from concept to reality.  I`d like to have a prototype made (to test it out), and then take the next step whatever that may be. What should my first step be? I don`t have cash to spend on patient the product itself, so not sure how to get the ball rolling, so to speak.  Any advice will be helpful, especially from those whom have taken a product concept and have realized it.

Is this a mechanical, electronic, or engineered product? Or is it textile, fabric, or plastic?

It would be plastic, and large enough to fit in your palm.

Some SBDC centers around the country provide feasability services to help inventors determine whether or not their inventions can succeed in the marketplace. You might try seeing if the nearest SBDC office can help you.

Good luck!

Hello MdcnMn and welcome aboard!

First thing to do is to do a preliminary patent search, not so much because you want to patent it yourself (you already stated that you don`t have the funds to) but more so you don`t infringe on someone else`s IP (intellectual property)  Start at www.uspto.gov

Thank you all so much for the helpful advice...I was looking for one avenue, but you all have offered so many! I think I will pursue all of them and learn as much as I can before taking the next step.
