I`d like to open a food stand (i.e. hot dog stand) on a corner of my local market area.  It would be mobile, and the food stand would complement the local area very well. My question is, do I need permission from the business owners in front of which I may stand and sell? Obviously I would be outside, but not sure if business would be too happy about having someone standing near their store front trying to make a buck selling a much needed item for the area.

Not sure about your question but you must check out this site if you are going to open a hot dog stand. I am going to do the same when I retire and have been doing some research and came across this site. www.hotdogbook.com.  I have no connection to the owner whatsoever other than I bought his ebook. It contains excellent info on everything you need to know to run a hot dog stand, you may be able to find your answer there. It also has a blog that other hot dog stand owners chat on, ask there, they`ll know. Good luck!

Your local zoning office is a good bet for this kind of information. Some cities restrict what can be sold on the sidewalks much more than others. The last thing you want to do is buy your hot dog stand and then discover it is against the law to run it!

And don`t forget there will be health and safety laws to comply with.

Good luck!

Thank you for all your input my fellow entrepreneurs. Zoning seems like a good place to begin with.

Thank You!

Anybody selling edible food needs a license to do that. Moreover, you are doing a hot dog stand in the public and you probably need another license for that.

You must check this out at the local level in order to get precise information.

It is likely that you will need -

A) A business license - just as you would with any business

B) A mobile vendors permit - to operate in a public place. This is usually issued by local police, park authorities or other local officials.

C) To comply with local board of health requirements.

I think you would first need a food license plus you would probably also require permission from local authorities for setting up your food stand.
