Hello everyone out there.  My name is Roberta, I am 26 years old and I live in Florida.   I am just starting my entrepreneurial journey.  I am passionate about starting a concert promoting/ event planning business here in Florida but I have no idea where to start.  I am looking for any advice, I am all open ears.

I have been a member of the site for a couple days now and to be honest with you, I couldn`t figure out where to start.  So I just browsed everywhere.  I finally decided to open up and get the advice that I really signed up for.  I am really looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say and cant wait to put some of your input and advice to use.

My goal with starting a concert promotion/ event planning business is to give us young adults something more to do on a regular basis besides going to the movies or a night club with a bunch of 21 year olds (no offense).  I hate having a free night from my kids and nothing to do but go to the movie, I personally  much rather watch movies at home on my couch, but that is just me.  I have been sitting on this idea for over 3 years now and finally decided to take action.  My only request:  PLEASE HELP!

I look forward to hearing from any and every one
Roberta

Good place to start:  www.innoventum.com.  Download their "Business Blueprint" pdf.  Good luck!

I hosted and promoted concerts for a couple of years back in the day. It was a blast. I had a lot of fun doing it and made some money on the side. Basically, I would gather interest with local bands and say that part of the money was going to charity, and part of it would got the band that brought the most people. Like a battle of the bands. This got most bands interested. I would talk with the local venues and get pricing, but I would then reach out for sponsors to pay for the event costs itself. Of couse then the sponsors would be advertised in the venue and announced before each band started. So I ended up never having to pay any of my own money for the show, charged $10 at the door, and the venue took care of sound and such. My first event was with like 50 people, but then I promoted it a lot at school at the time and become kinda known for it. Next was like 200, then 400. Then it kinda stood around there the next couple of times.

Anyways, I recommend it and anyone can definitely do it. I started doing that when I was 16.

Robillion,

Thanks for the advice.  How did you go about getting your sponsors?

I have done a few events through volunteer positions. Keep in mind that this kind of work is all about developing relationships with vendors in your area, but it doesn`t hurt to know the reputations of other companies

I would suggest you start working in an events company to get the best hands-on experience for FREE while learning the ropes. It's way too expensive to gamble on starting a business you know nothing about.
