I was recently told by one of the large hosting providers in the country that the longer your site has been around the higher the point ranking.

Thoughts?

Hi,

The longer your domain name is available to be indexed it can help your site`s standing. So, it is a good idea once you buy a domain name to get at least a temporary site up an running.

This does not guarantee that older sites always beat newer sites in search engine results. Many other factors affect search engine results.

There are an awful lot of variables that go into how a domain gets ranked. So look at it this way:

If everyone on the Web had a domain and nobody ever changed anything on their home page, then yes, the longest-existing domains would likely show up higher in the rankings. But nobody anywhere would ever have to make any changes to their Web pages.

I think what you are talking about is the registration length ... essentially, Google looks more favorably (supposedly) upon sites that are registered for 5-10 years instead of 1-year registrations. The theory behind this is that link farms and fly-by-night operations tend to only be registered for 1 year or less.

Google (and others) have good resources on how your page is ranked and how to improve your rankings.

Read though the FAQ`s and if your business is to rely on the technology of the web it is a good idea to talk with somebody that knows (like a search engine optimizer SEO). The point is if your business relies on the website you need to make sure you are listed and aren`t going to get delisted by the search engines. Being listed is only 1/2 the battle to running your website. Make sure it is up and available. If it isn`t when somebody goes to order a product and it is down they will go to a competitor.

Certainly the converse is true; the less time a site has been around, the less likely it is to be featured by search engines.  This is particularly true for Google; search for "Google Sandbox" to read more this.  But the good news is, like a fine wine, your ranking will get better over time.

Good luck,
Scott

Absolutely true, Scott, but you need to "keep the wine" in a nice cool basement, otherwise it will go sour :) The idea is that aging should be done actively, with new original content being added at least once every 2 weeks and with incoming links that should also be gradual.
