Update to My Post
Are you shipping products with Lithium Batteries in your products?
You may be shipping HazMat and not know it under new regulations. And just having the box labeled right can keep you from receiving big fines and jail time.
My company has a link to read more about the new Federal Regulations concerning lithium batteries at our Blog site, http://HarveySoftware.blogspot.com/ and also what the new UPS requirements are. This is all free info.
I just wanted to make sure you are all familiar with the new changes that take place Oct 1.
For a number of years our CPS shipping software has supported sending Hazardous Materials via UPS using Masterform software from LabelMaster. Only a few of our customers need this type of service because most do not ship parcels that are considered hazardous. Some just process the required hazardous materials separately. But for many companies, how certain items are shipped will change come October 1st.
Starting October 1st all hazardous materials shippers must process their shipments using a carrier compliant shipping solution in conjunction with hazardous materials shipment documentation software. To be compliant with the new D.O.T. mandated change effective on that date, shippers must make sure that when they ship any item now considered hazardous, it is done according to the new requirements. Businesses shipping hazardous materials and that do not comply with regulations may no longer be able to ship hazardous materials packages via their carrier and may face heavy fines plus other penalties.
Items now considered hazardous include those that are indicated to be:
You may not think this affects your business, but this includes items such as batteries, products that have batteries, thermometers, barometers, camping gear with compressed gas or STERNO, CO2 cartridges, items to be repaired that may contain fuel residue like lawn equipment or auto parts, fertilizer, shipments that contain dry ice, household cleaning products, paints and many more common items. This is wider reaching than you might think and the fines could kill a small business!
For this reason we are trying to get a handle on how the market will react to these changes and I would like to know how you plan to deal with these new regulations and how the new requirements are affecting your business…
Over the past year we have enhanced our shipping software product known as CPS to better meet the needs of today’s Internet retailer in a challenging market. This effort has taken all of our resources to complete. Most of the changes came as a direct result of listening to our customers’ needs, market research and through the information and ideas collected on-line at communities like SuN. I am very excited to say that CPS now does some really fabulous new things to help today’s struggling businesses. Naturally CPS ships your products fast and efficiently via UPS, FedEx, USPS, Endicia Internet postage and others, but that is a given. The difference is that CPS now helps businesses in our tough economy. Some of the great new problem solving features includes cutting shipping costs, increasing sales, expanding market size, greatly decreasing shopping cart abandonment and decreasing the environmental impact of delivering products. We priced CPS to be affordable to all. We also created a new web site (http://www.HarveySoft.com) to better explain the problem solving benefits of using CPS. A new Savings Calculator even lets visitors to our new web site estimate the savings they might see by using CPS. But I am getting carried away. This is background information, so please forgive me if this almost reads like an advertisement. I guess you can tell I am very excited about this.
Now that we have this exciting new solution, we need business partners to help us get the word out, to sell the product, and help Internet retailers to install it. I know there are many very talented business members at SuN with many looking for new ways to make money. Now that we have greatly enhanced CPS, we need entrepreneurs to help us sell, train, integrate and install it at customer sites. We need independent programmers and developers to make interfaces which allow CPS to work with ecommerce and accounting systems. We need independent technical sales businesses, ecommerce suppliers, web designers, system integration companies and other business partners to help us help Internet retailers install, integrate and use CPS. Those who are willing to get involved will be able to resell our products at a profit and we will also help them promote their services to our 2000+ daily visitors to our web sites. For an example of how you will be listed with us, just click on the “Partners” tab at our new web site.
Now I finally get to my question. We have spent all our time and effort on our new product and web site. We now need help getting a way to get our new product to market. We feel strongly that it can only be done though a business partner network. Do any of you have any ideas on how we could get this done?
That is a great thought. To be honest with you we had figured this would have happened anyway if we offered both plans. There is no commitment with our monthly pricing so switching plans would have been as easy as it was to just stop using it. But that was not what has made us rethink this.
One of the many points that changed our minds on making this change was when we approached some of our current customers and asked them this same question. They told us that we saved them so much every month in shipping costs and our support team being there was such an important insurance policy for keeping them moving goods out the door that they did not like the idea. They also said that our current rate was so low, that they felt dropping our price any lower would make our product look like it wasn’t worth its true value. In other words, a low price might kill new sales instead of increasing them! Many of them both large and small also told us that before they decided to purchase our product, it was our low prices made them look around first. They said our competitors kept telling them you get what you pay for. This made them think that our product was just too good to be true. And they finally pointed out that they were glad that they had purchased it anyway, which by the way, we are too. So we realized just like being too high in price, you can be too low, too.
So we are now taking all we have learned and we are coming up with what we think is a much better approach to our marketing. You are right that one needs to put a ton of thought in every decision and not be afraid to talk about it. SuN is a great tool for sharing ideas and solutions.
I really appreciate your input.
